THE CABRILLO COLLEGE DANCE DEPARTMENT PRESENTS
THE WINTER DANCE CONCERT
December 7-8 at 8 pm and Dec 9 at 3 pm

APTOS, CA—The Cabrillo College Dance Department is proud to present an evening of exciting new dance works created by faculty, guest, and student choreographers, and performed by the students of Cabrillo College. The Winter Dance Concert will perform on Friday and Saturday evening, December 7 and 8 at 8 pm. Matinee on Sunday, December 9 at 3 pm.

Featured choreographers for the evening include Amy Farhood, Christy Funsch, Leslie Johnson, Yasmina Porter-Honicky, Cid Pearlman, Sharon Took-Zozaya, Beverly Torre, Marissa Valera, Lambert Van Buuren and Rachel Van Dessel.

Christy Funsch, the newest member of the Cabrillo Dance Faculty, will present Pretty Vacancies, which takes a sardonic look at information conveniently not included by the U.S. news media on its “coverage” of the war in Iraq. In this premiere for the students of Cabrillo College, “Pretty” also refers to the heartbreakingly beautiful melodic line in Dvorak’s trio, Terzetto for violin, violin, and viola; “vacancies” refers to what some musical historians call Dvorak’s “missing cello” string trio.

Amy Farhood’s choreography focuses on the rhythms and moods found in Latin, Salsa, and Flamenco dance.  Her dance Flourish, explores the social basis of salsa movement and Cuban motion, revealed in intricate body movement and partner formations on the concert stage. The dynamics of partner dancing are explored and abstracted, encouraging performers to express themselves using Latin rhythms, styling and techniques.

Cid Pearlman will premiere The Camper Van Dances, a post-punk folk dance, which draws inspiration equally from the movement styles of Hollywood choreographer Busby Berkeley and postmodern dance maverick Trisha Brown. Though Pearlman has been collaborating with Camper Van Beethoven members Jonathan Segel and Victor Krummenacher since the early 90s, this is her first time working with their earlier band recordings. Pearlman is co-producing the Winter Dance Concert with Amy Farhood.

Sharon Took-Zozaya will present two dances in this year’s concert. In her newest work for the Repertory class, dancers meet at thresholds, inhabit spaces around and between each other, and discover what happens when they cross to the other side. Took-Zozaya’s dances for her Adaptive Dance class are always an audience favorite. This year she and her students are creating a new dance that evokes images of the elements and the seasons.
