JEFFERS, LANGUAGE AND NATURE Friday, February 15 – Sunday, February 17, 2008, Horticulture Center, Aptos Campus APTOS, CA—Renowned Central Coast poet, Robinson Jeffers, and his poetry will be subject of in-depth discussion at the 14th Annual Robins Jeffers Association Conference to be held this weekend. Starting with a reception on Friday evening at 4:30 p.m. at Michael’s on Main, the conference continues on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 5 p.m. at Cabrillo’s Horticulture Center at the top of its Aptos campus. Scholars such as Geneva Gano of Stanford University, Jim Baird of the University of Texas at Ausin, David Mason, poet, Colorado College, among many others, will be present. "The tides are in our veins, we still mirror the stars, Jeffers’ poems explored the relationship between human civilization and nature using classicial themes. A graduate of Occidental College at the age of 18, he studied literature, history, poetry and medicine. In 1913, he settled in Carmel with his wife Una, building by hand, their home Tor House and Hawk Tower on a windy headland overlooking Carmel Bay. His long-lined narrative works extol the beauty and power of the central California coast and provided inspiration to early environmentalists Ansel Adams and Edward Weston with whom he became great friends.
