"The tides are in our veins, we still mirror the stars,
l
ife is your child, but there is in me
Older and harder than life and more impartial, the eye
that watched before there was an ocean.
-Jeffers, Continent's End

Jeffers’ poems explored the relationship between human civilization and nature using classicial themes. A graduate of Occidental College at the age of 18, he studied literature, history, poetry and medicine. In 1913, he settled in Carmel with his wife Una, building by hand, their home Tor House and Hawk Tower on a windy headland overlooking Carmel Bay.

His long-lined narrative works extol the beauty and power of the central California coast and provided inspiration to early environmentalists Ansel Adams and Edward Weston with whom he became great friends.
