CABRILLO COLLEGE PRESIDENT BRIAN KING HONORED FOR SUCCESS IN INCREASING FUNDING FOR STUDENTS

APTOS, CA—Cabrillo College President Brian King was given top leadership honors today at a meeting of the Cabrillo College Foundation board of directors. King was honored for his role in increasing private and community support during his four years as president at Cabrillo.

Since taking the helm of the college in August 2005, King has helped the Cabrillo College Foundation raise over $10 million. Currently the foundation’s endowment ranks fourth out of California’s 109 community colleges. Also during King’s tenure new campus construction has flourished. The college now boasts a new Scotts Valley Center and new state-of-the-art Student Activities Center, with the Arts Education Classrooms project, housing a theatre, recital halls and classroom space for the visual, applied and performing arts currently under construction. In the planning stages are a new Industrial Technology Education Center in Watsonville and a new Health and Wellness Center on the Aptos campus.

King received the award from Cabrillo College Trustee Claudine Wildman and Foundation Board President Linda Burroughs. Proclamations from Representative John Laird, Representative Anna Caballeros and Senator Joseph Simitian were also read to commemorate the honor.

King graduated summa cum laude from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a degree in history and went out to earn a law degree from Duke University School of Law. After several years as a civil trial attorney at one of the Missouri’s largest law firms, he worked at Ozark Technical Community College where he became the vice president of administration and business. King went on to get his doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas where his dissertation on “Successful Community College Elections” was selected by the Council for the Study of Community Colleges as 1999 Dissertation of the Year.

“Brian is excellent at networking within the community to secure the vital resources necessary to provide a high level of relevant skills and academic opportunities for Cabrillo College students. He truly deserves to be singled out for recognition of this kind. We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber of leadership heading up one of our most important community institutions,” said Burroughs.

King, 44, also received the Network of California Community College Foundation’s 2005 Presidential Leadership Award for his exceptional leadership abilities and support for fund development at Cabrillo.

While the college was established in 1959, the foundation was established in 1962 as a private, non-profit organization. Its sole mission is to provide support for Cabrillo College, its students and faculty via fundraising activities. Cabrillo depends upon this crucial support from the community to provide an enhanced educational experience for its students.
