Press Releases 2008
CHARLES CANFIELD, SEASIDE COMPANY PRESIDENT, Aptos, CA—Charles Canfield, Seaside Company President, recently led a group of Cabrillo College President’s Circle major donors on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. The group toured the Boardwalk’s Cocoanut Grove basement where the technical services and arcade shop is located, as well as various maintenance shops located in the Boardwalk’s river basement complex. Ted Whiting, long-time Boardwalk employee, also assisted with the tour. Canfield and Whiting treated the group to a new attraction, not-yet-open to the public, called “Desperados.” Participants took a ride on moving horses, and after encouragement from a cartoon cowpoke, shot at targets on a large movie screen. Cabrillo College President Brian King was lauded as having the highest score. Daring members of the group also rode the Boardwalk’s thrilling “Double Shot” and walked through the creepy “Fright Walk.” The groups also visited the Boardwalk’s second floor creative department to see how new rides are developed using story boards. Canfield, a member of Cabrillo College’s President’s Circle Committee, discussed an upcoming project involving improvements to the Boardwalk’s Beach Street façade. Last year the Boardwalk celebrated its 100th anniversary. In addition to President King, his wife Cristina and Cabrillo Foundation Board President Linda Burroughs, those in attendance were Mike Allard, Harry and Mary Blanchard, John Burroughs, Karen Cogswell, Mickey Evans, Pat Rebele, Kevin Rooney, Melinda Silverstein, Bill and Brigid Simpkins and Rachael Spencer. The group had lunch with Canfield and Whiting after the tour.
