Cabrillo College’s Distinguished Artists Series Presents Jazz Pianist Tom McDermott
Saturday, October 11 at 8:00 PM, Cabrillo College Theater

Aptos, CA— The Cabrillo College Distinguished Artists series is honored to present New Orleans Pianist Tom McDermott performing traditional music from New Orleans, Brazil and the Americas on October 11 at the Cabrillo Theater at 8:00 PM.

Tom McDermott is one of New Orleans' most respected pianists and composers. He was born in St. Louis in l957 and began studying the piano at age six. By his early teens he was playing ragtime and New Orleans traditional jazz.

After graduating from Washington University with a masters degree in music, Tom moved to New Orleans in l984. In the Crescent City, he pursued a busy career composing, arranging and playing both solo piano and with bands. For most of the l990s Tom performed with the Dukes of Dixieland, playing around the world (including Carnegie Hall), recording with legends like Danny Barker and releasing albums like the Grammy-nominated "Gloryland."

Though best known for his love of traditional jazz, McDermott has branched out in other areas. He began visiting Brazil in l989, and on his seventh trip in 2004 recorded "Choro do Norte," a mix of Brazilian choro and New Orleans jazz that received rave reviews in both the New York Times and Rolling Stone Magazine. He co-founded the modern brass band The New Orleans Nightcrawlers, which recorded two albums on the Rounder label while touring four continents. Tom composed the music for the triple-Obie-award winning off-Broadway show Nita and Zita. His work has been touted in the Chicago Tribune, downbeat, the Los Angeles Times and the New

McDermott's latest recording is a cut on an album of duets by the New Orleans soul legend Irma Thomas, in the company of Norah Jones, Randy Newman and a host of great New Orleans pianists like Dr. John and Ellis Marsalis.
