CABRILLO COLLEGE’S DISTINGUISHED ARTISTS SERIES PRESENTS
ACCLAIMED RUSSIAN PIANIST ALEXANDER ROMANOVSKY

Aptos, CA— Cabrillo College’s Distinguished Artists Series is proud to present Russian pianist Alexander Romanovsky in the new Cabrillo Music Recital Hall, playing works by Rachmaninoff, Brahms and Rameau on Saturday October 24 at 8 PM.

A prodigious pianist in every sense of the word, the young Russian-born Romanovsky’s astonishing accomplishments, exceptional maturity, unmatched virtuosic technique and rare passion for music is evident in every single touch of the keyboard. Romanovsky has the piano world and critics alike speculating that he will be the next heir to the great Russian tradition that brought forth the likes of Vladimir Horowitz and Sviatoslav Richter. When compared to the great Horowitz by Italian critic Umberto Martinelli, the young Romanovsky was pronounced, “Indeed, a bit better.” Romanovsky’s wide recognition is not just limited to press, but also includes the music community; renowned conductor Tamás Vásáry proclaimed Romanovsky, “One of the greatest virtuosos of our time.”

Having shown an extraordinary musical talent since childhood, Romanovsky gave his concerto debut at the age of nine, and was touring as a soloist with Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Virtuosi by age eleven. Upon moving to Imola, Italy to study with Leonid Margarius (protégé of Regina Horowitz sister of the legendary Vladimir), Romanovsky received an honor that has only been granted to two other musicians before him—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gioacchino Rossini—at the age of fifteen, Romanovsky was awarded the “Honoris Causa Degree” from the Royal Philharmonic Academy of Bologna for his awe-inspiring interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Two years later, at the remarkable age of only seventeen, Romanovsky claimed the top prize of the renowned International “Ferruccio Busoni” Piano Competition, furthering his reputation as one of the leading young pianists of our time.

His unique artistry and unparalleled command of his instrument has taken him to some of the leading venues in Europe and virtually every renowned hall in Italy. Highlights of the 2008/09 season include a debut in the United States, as well as performances in Hamburg, London and Milan. Despite his young age, Romanovsky has been invited to numerous prominent international festivals and is a frequent guest of the International Piano Festival “Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli” in Brescia and Bergamo, Italy. Notably, in 2007, Alexander was invited to perform at the Papal Residence in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI in a concert celebrating the 110th Anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s birth.

Romanovsky recently signed an exclusive contract with the Decca label, and released a CD featuring Schumann’s “Symphonic Etudes” and Brahms “Variations on a Theme of Paganini” to great praise from both audiences and critics who hailed the recording as being, “A signature of talent” (Filippo Michelangeli, Suonare News).
