Aptos, CA—Cabrillo Stage, the professional musical theatre company, presents its first holiday production, Scrooge, The Musical. The beloved Christmas tale will star Santa Cruz favorite Joseph Ribeiro in the title role, which performs in the new Crocker Theater, December 18 through January 3.
The ideal Christmas treat, based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is the timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, a lonely miser who is visited on Christmas Eve by three spirits who teach him lessons of love and giving. Don’t miss Ebenezer, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and a whole host of Dickensian characters in the award-winning, international smash hit musical SCROOGE! This musical version by Leslie Bricusse includes such acclaimed songs as “Thank You Very Much,” “A Better Life” and “A Christmas Carol.”
Cabrillo Stage completes their 2009 season with this, their first holiday production, which promises fun for the whole family during the holidays. Joseph Ribeiro, known for his roles at Shakespeare Santa Cruz and in such Cabrillo Stage productions as Peter Pan and Oliver, returns to Cabrillo Stage to play Ebenezer Scrooge.
“We all know this story,” says director Andrew Ceglio. “It’s completely universal in its portrayal of classic archetypes. Today, we are all living in a time when we are all being forced to pull ourselves away from material possessions and re-evaluate how we think, see and live life. With that in mind, Cabrillo Stage’s production will give emphasis to the subject of love, friendship and good will.” Ceglio’s continues, “Even though these themes are already present in the story, our version of Scrooge will deeply explore the characters and how they tie-in with Scrooge’s arch of renewal and redemption.”
Though a minimalist approach is being taking for the production, focusing on storytelling, choral music and the joy of the holiday season, it will also take full advantage of all the “bells and whistles” in the new state-of-the art Cabrillo Crocker Theater.
Even during these difficult economic times, Cabrillo Stage remains a bright and shining star in the theatre world, offering the community first-rate family entertainment, which will continue to expand in 2010. Starting with the launch of their 29th season next summer, Stage will become a year-round company, presenting three summer repertory productions and a holiday show every December.
Cabrillo Stage will be showing SCROOGE at a special time of 7:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday evenings, as well as 2:00 p.m. matinees on both Saturdays and Sundays.
