Four-Show Season Begins June 24 and Runs Through Christmas, 2011

Aptos, CA—Cabrillo Stage, the professional musical theatre company at Cabrillo College, announces its 30th anniversary season starting June 24 and playing through December 30. Audiences can expect another fun-filled year of entertainment as Cabrillo Stage produces three shows in repertoire this summer, and a Christmas production.

Cabrillo Stage’s 2011 summer repertory season opens with the hilarious comedy The Full Monty performing in the Cabrillo Crocker Theater June 24 - July 17. The two person song-cycle The Last Five Years performs in the intimate Cabrillo Black Box Theater July 8 - August 14. Hairspray lights up the Crocker Theater, July 22 - August 14 to round-out the summer. The Christmas season will mark the return of everyone’s favorite boy-band “The Plaids” in Plaid Tidings, playing December 16 - 30th.

Thirty years of entertaining Santa Cruz County audiences has left a sparkling trail of history at Cabrillo Stage. To celebrate its 30th Anniversary, audiences can expect great performers and directors from our 30 year history. One of those will be beloved founding Producing Artistic Director Lile Cruse, who returns to music direct and conduct the full-pit orchestra for Hairspray, along with Broadway veteran Janie Scott, who will direct. Together Scott and Cruse brought the county some of the most memorable shows at Stage such as, Honk!, Peter Pan, Annie Get Your Gun and Some Like it Hot. Dustin Leonard, who directed the sell-out production of West Side Story in 2003, returns to direct The Full Monty.

Among the season’s returning thespian favorites is Bay Area equity actor Tony Panighetti playing the drag-queen “Edna” in Hairspray. Panighetti gave striking performances as the lead in Scrooge this past Christmas, and as Jerry in Some Like it Hot (2002). Company favorites Andrew Ceglio and Ariel Buck will return to star in The Last Five Years, and the original cast of 2008’s smash hit Forever Plaid reunite to perform Plaid Tidings.

Online and in-person ticket sales and subscription packages go on sale May 25 to Cabrillo Stage donors and May 27 to the general public. 30th Anniversary events will be announced shortly. Watch for special ticket giveaways, post-show discussions with cast and crew, Gypsy Robe winner’s reunion, a thirty-year retrospect display in the Crocker Theater, and more.

Nominated for nine Tony Awards, The Full Monty is the hilarious comedy about six unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, New York who come up with a bold way to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties, they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them. You won’t want to miss this upbeat musical! June 24 - July 17.

The Last Five Years is a one-act song-cycle that explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a form of storytelling in which Cathy’s story is told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple have first met). July 8 - August 14.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, Hairspray is a splashy musical piled bouffant-high with laughter and romance. It’s 1962 and pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad has only one dream—to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, but she must use her newfound power to vanquish the reigning teen queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do! Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, catchy songs include “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” July 22 - August 14.

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings is a brand new show that offers the best of Forever Plaid tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been “Plaid-erized,” our boys are back to perform their Christmas Special. At first they aren’t sure why they’ve returned, but a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. December 16 - 30.

Cabrillo Stage offers subscription packages (four shows for as low as $95), individual and group ticket rates, and special children’s presentations. Ticket sales begin May 27.
