Restrictions on Repeating a Course

We want you to be aware of a new State regulation that will take effect Summer 2012. Please note that there is a separate Federal repeat policy for financial aid students.

Students will be allowed ONLY three attempts to pass a course and then will no longer be able to take that course again at Cabrillo.

This means, beginning Summer 2012, you will be UNABLE to retake a course at Cabrillo College if you have attempted the same course three or more times and received grades of "D", "F", "NC" (no credit), "NP" (no pass), or "W" (withdraw). ANY combination of grades "D", "F", "NC", "NP", or "W" counts toward the three attempts allowed.

The following examples demonstrate how the new policy may affect a student as of Summer 2012:

  • A student who has attempted the same course two times and received grades of "D", "F", "NC", "NP" or "W" (in any combination), may take the course ONE MORE TIME ONLY.
  • A student who withdraws (receives a "W") from the same course three times or more MAY NOT retake the course again at Cabrillo.
  • A student who receives an "F" in a course, takes it again and recieves a "D", then takes it third time but withdraws earning a "W", MAY NOT retake the course again at Cabrillo.

Courses dropped early, before the "W" period begins, WILL NOT COUNT toward the three attempts allowed.

If you have attempted a course two times already, you are allowed one more attempt. We encourage you to take advantage of support services available to you such as tutoring, math and integrated learning centers, Learning Communities, and study skills courses and labs, in order to be successful in your courses.

Please note: Courses that are listed as repeatable in the Cabrillo College Catalog are not currently subject to this regulation. However, the Community College Board of Governors (BOG) in Sacramento is expected to revise the regulations on repeatable courses within a few months. Any changes will be noted on the college website and in next year's college catalog.

In some cases, if there has been a significant lapse of time since your last enrollment in a course, a one-time exception to this policy may apply. If you have questions about this policy and how it applies to you please see a counselor at one of the following locations:
