The Quay Gallery in 1961

To suggest that I’m only delighted to work with Ruth Braunstein is to somewhat underestimate the gratitude I feel in working with someone who has so persistently and graciously represented artists for nearly fifty years. The exhibition at the Cabrillo Gallery is for me another wonderful example of a collaborative friendship that dates back to the mid 1980’s.

Representing work from her private art collection and a selection of current Braunstein/Quay Gallery artists, “Ruth Braunstein & The Braunstein/Quay Gallery, 1961 - Present” exhibits the work of nearly thirty artists. As a young artist living in San Francisco in the late 1970’s, a commercial gallery such as Ruth’s became a necessary social destination. A number of my college art instructors happened to exhibit with her so I spent a lot of time at openings and attending exhibitions. Every visit to her gallery, every collaboration I’ve had, has amounted to a greater admiration for this woman who is committed to exhibiting art and artists of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Since 1961, as the Quay Gallery in Tiburon, and continuing on to her current location in San Francisco, the Braunstein/Quay Gallery, Ruth Braunstein has launched and illuminated the careers and artwork of many notable artists. A real delight for me is coming back to the gallery and co-curating with Ruth this new exhibition that is as much a tribute to her as it is to the artists she has dedicated so much of her life to.
