How to become an Elementary School Teacher in California

Multiple Subject Credential Programs

Becoming an elementary school teacher in California requires a Multiple Subjects Credential. This credential allows you to teach all subjects in the classroom. All of the campuses of the California State Universities (CSU) and many of the University of California (UC) have multiple subject credential programs. Although there are programs of various lengths, most Multiple Subject Credential Programs take approximately one year to compete. It is during this year that student teaching is done. Students must pass the must pass the CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers) test before applying to a credential program.

Blended Programs

Usually a credential program is completed after finishing a bachelor’s degree; however, some of the universities have developed "blended" programs. These blended programs allow students who are completing undergraduate work to begin taking credential courses before completing a bachelor’s degree. At some schools these blended programs are only open to first time freshmen, but most schools plan to expand these programs over the next year to include transfer students. Admission to blended programs can be very selective, please check with the program office at the transfer school.

Approved undergraduate programs

As of Fall 2003, there are no approved majors that exempt students from the California Examination for Teachers (CSET). Liberal Studies for Teacher Preparation is still the recommeded major for future teachers, although at some universities, other programs are available--please check with a counselor or the TRDP program-see below.
