How to Read the Schedule
of Classes
Move your mouse over the picture to the left for a demonstration
of terms used in the schedule of classes. |
Terms to be familiar with:
- Units: A unit equals
the number of hours in a class per week.
- Full Load: 12 units is considered full load.
However, to complete a degree or transfer in two years, students
must take at least 15 units per semester. (Remember: Cabrillo
offers classes in winter and summer sessions.)
- Prerequisite: Prerequisite is
a class or assessment level that must preceed this course in
order for you to enroll.
- Corequisite: This is a class
that must be taken at the same time. For example, English 100L
must be taken with English 100. <more>
- CR/NC Option: This means
a class can be taken for CR (credit) or NC (no-credit) instead
of the usual grade (A,B,C.D or F). If you choose the CR/NC option,
it will not affect your G.P.A. (grade point average).
- Recommended: This means
it is recommended, though not necessary, for you to have had
a particular class or level of math and/or English before taking
the class.
- Transfer Credit: This
means a class transfers to CSU (California State University)
or UC (University of California) or both. Transfer credit is
indicated in both the Schedule of Classes and the Cabrillo Catalog.
Challenging a Requisite:
This requires written documentation that explains the alternative
course work, background, and/or abilities that adequately prepare
you for the course. A successful challenge allows you to take the
course without having had the prerequisite. See the catalog for
a more detailed description of the process. Frequently
asked questions about the schedule
Here are some frequently asked questions
about the schedule and knowing these answers could save you a lot
of time at Registration.....
What does a class in bold letters
mean? A class that is in bold letters means that it
is an evening class.
If a class has TBA instead of
a time, what does that mean? TBA means To Be Arranged
at your convenience. The class may be done in a lab setting at
your on pace.
If a class indicates that you
must enroll in this lecture or lab, do I have to? If
the schedule says you must enroll, then you must. This statement
usually pertains to English or Science classes which require
a lecture and lab to be taken together.
Is
a class that is offered 1 night a week for 3 hours (units) worth
as much as the same class that is offered 1 hour on 3 days a week?
Classes that are offered for 3 hours, regardless of the
time they are offered, are worth the same amount of units.
How
many hours of homework can you expect per week?
A
3 unit class which requires 3 hours per week in the classroom, will
usually require an additional 6 hours of homework per week. Keep
this in mind when planning your schedule.
