Cabrillo College Children's Center
Food and Nutrition
Nutritious snacks, prepared by teachers and children, are served during both the morning and afternoon programs. We avoid refined sugars and processed foods, and emphasize fruits, vegetables and grain. The snack program is partially supported by the State Child Nutrition Program. Parents are welcome to donate nutritious snacks like fruit, vegetables, etc. any time or for special occasions. Many families like to bring in a special snack for birthdays or holidays. Please consult with the teachers about the food, and let us know in advance.
Please do not send your child to school with any food, gum or candy. If your child has special food needs or allergies, be sure to tell us. If your child is vegetarian, we will make sure that there are vegetarian alternatives at each meal.
If your child uses a bottle, please leave the days supply of bottles in the refrigerator with your child's name and that day's date. We provide masking tape and marker. Please remember to take all bottles home at the end of each day.
Lunches are prepared according to national guidelines for child nutrition. Children are encouraged to taste new foods, to serve themselves, and to enjoy eating and socializing. They are not forced to eat foods they dislike although our experience has been that most children love the menus and often try things they haven't liked before simply because they see the other children eating with satisfaction.
