Cabrillo College Children's Center
Programm for Parents
Parents in the Classroom
Parents are always welcome at the Center. You and your child's caregiver can determine how best for you to visit in the classroom. With some children predictability of visits is important, for others drop-in visits are fine. The observation areas also allow for "check-ins" without extra good-byes for your child. We also invite other significant members of your family to visit. Your child, their friends and teachers will all benefit from your family's participation in our program.
Parents have various opportunities to participate in our parent education program. All parents enroll in an ECE 137 class, take part in formal and informal parent conferences, and home visits. Parents also have daily contact with the staff to share ideas and concerns and may borrow books, video tapes and articles.
ECE 137A and ECE 137B-1 unit
At least one family member of each child in this Center must be enrolled in ECE 137A or ECE 137B. Course work for this class includes parent meetings, individual conferences with a Children's Center Teacher, a home visit from your child's caregiver, as well as completing parent information forms, and individual options of reading, observing and meeting informally with other parents.
Your enrollment in this one unit class provides accident insurance for your child during the semester, as well as attendance revenues for Cabrillo College.
Parent Work Hours
The staff depends on help from our community of parents to create and maintain a high quality environment for children. Parent tasks include such options as repairing books and puzzles, carpentry, cleaning, repair, and sewing projects. We have at least one parent workday per semester on a Saturday, and one parent meeting per month. We require all families to participate by working 8 parent hours per semester and attending 4 parent meetings. Please talk to our staff about sharing your skills and creative ideas.
