GPA Verification 1.11
For the Cal Grant portion of a student's financial aid package, there is the need for a GPA verification to be sent to the state. This process takes place early each spring semester with a March 2nd deadline and early each fall semester with a September 2nd deadline. Cal Grant is only interested in the college GPA if the student had 24 units of college work or 16 units of "degree applicable/letter graded" work completed at the time of the GPA submission. If the student does not have 24 units of college work or 16 units of "degree applicable/letter graded" work completed prior to the submission of the GPA, s/he needs to have their high school do the GPA verification.
As of February 28, 2002, the following is true with regard to GPA verifications:
1) we include units through the winter or summer session directly preceding the GPA verification term.
2) students with 24 units from Cabrillo (any units) through wintersession will have their GPA sent electronically - no need to complete a GPA verification form.
3) students with 16 degree applicable/letter graded units through wintersession will have their GPA sent electronically - no need to complete a GPA verification form.
4) we would only need to verify GPA by hand if the student is using units from other colleges, or has pre-1982 Cabrillo units that they want included in the GPA. In the case of units from other colleges, we can use unnofficial transcripts to verify the GPA.
5) if the student does not meet the unit criteria specified above, s/he must get the GPA verification done through their high school of last attendance.GPA verification is actually a function done by A & R. Counselors will be asked to assist in this process if there is a need. This would only be for those students who want to include coursework from other colleges. If asked to complete GPA verifications, it is important to compute the GPA including all college work based on the transcripts that we have available to us. You will be provided with the necessary paperwork and transcripts.
Students may also approach counselors directly to fill out their Cal Grant GPA verification forms. They can either be directed to A & R to go through the more official process, or we can compute the GPA, sign the paperwork, and the student can send the paperwork directly.
