General Education Certification 1.9

When students transfer they should have Cabrillo certify their completion of general education. Cabrillo can certify both the CSU GE pattern and IGETC. To have Cabrillo certify completion of GE, the student needs to submit a "Transcript Request Form" to Admissions and Records. They should submit this near the end of their final term at Cabrillo. There is a place on the form for them to indicate where the transcript should be sent, and which GE pattern to certify - CSU or IGETC.

With the CSU GE pattern we certify area by area - in other words we can do "partial certification". Areas of CSU GE pattern that are not complete at the time of transfer will need to be completed by the student in accordance with the transfer institution. Areas A and B4 must be complete as they are admission requirement courses.

With IGETC there is no partial certification. For Cabrillo to certify IGETC it needs to be completely done prior to transfer. If summer coursework is being used to finish IGETC, the student should request an official transcript to be sent to his/her transfer institution at the end of the spring term, and then submit the Final Transcript Request to A & R at the beginning of their summer class. They will need to be clear in this case that they want the GE certification to be complete based on their summer work, and a transcript to be sent to the transfer institution showing the summer work and GE certification.

There is an option in cases involving "Good Cause" whereby Cabrillo can certify completion of IGETC even though one or two classes are missing. UC and CSU campuses require students to have a "Good Cause" for requesting the completion of IGETC after transfer. At Cabrillo, "Good Cause" is defined as the following: illness, unavailable or cancelled courses, military service, an unexpected hardship such as family or employment problems, and counselor error.

If the  petition for partial certification of IGETC is approved, the student  may be able to complete IGETC in one of the following ways:

1)    Take a certified IGETC course, in the area to be completed, at any CCC at a time that does not require concurrent enrollment, such as during summer school.

2)    Complete the requirement at a CCC while concurrently enrolled at UC or CSU. The student will be subject to the UC or CSU campus rules regarding concurrent enrollment, so this option may not be available at every campus.

3)    Take a comparable course at the UC or CSU campus to which the student will be transferring. This option is at the discretion of each campus, so it may not be a choice available to each student.

The student will be expected to complete IGETC before the beginning of the second full year of enrollment at the UC or CSU campus.

The following committee has been appointed to determine "Good Cause": Donna Mekis (Transfer Center Director), Lynne Sergius-Briscoe (Counselor), Mary Ellen Sullivan (Articulation Officer), and Marci Wald (Counselor). Each time a Cabrillo student submits a Petition for Eligibility to Complete IGETC After Transfer, the above committee will determine if he/she meets the criteria for "Good Cause." Petitions should be submitted to the Articulation Officer, room 131.
