Transferable AA degree using the CSU GE pattern 3.2.5This section describes the AA degree that uses the CSU (yellow) pattern for general education rather than Cabrillo's blue GE pattern. If the student has 60 CSU transferable units, areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 completed, at least 30 units of the GE pattern done, and one multicultural class in their GE or major preparation, then they have earned the AA degree. As with all degrees, they can petition for the degree during the semester in which they are completing their final requirements. The most common major will be Liberal Arts. However, if the student has completed 20 units of major requirements listed in the suggested program of the catalog, then his/her AA can designate that major. If the degree is being written for a major other than Liberal Arts, include a separate sheet that lists their major preparation courses. Both the degree petition and the addendum sheet for majors other than Liberal Arts and linked at the bottom of this page. Using the following steps as a guide, fill out the yellow "Combined Requirements for the AA Degree and CSU GE Pattern" degree petition.
- Calculate the # of transferable units the student has completed making sure that you check units from other colleges for transferability. Use the CSU Baccalaureate lists on ASSIST as a guide. All courses at Cabrillo numbered from 1 - 99 are transferable to the CSU system. If you are unsure about any class being used from an out of state or 4 year university in California, check with the Transfer Center Director or the Articulation Officer. This is particularly true for the Critical Thinking requirement, math, and English courses.
- Make sure that the student has at least a 2.0 CSU transferable GPA.
- Determine the student's projected transferable unit total when adding in their in-progress units. For purposes of transfer advising, make sure they are projected to have the required units within the timelines required by the institution to which they are transferring.
- The student must have a minimum of 30 general education units to receive this degree. Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 must be completed. It is still excellent counseling to advise students to complete all 39 units of the CSU general education.
- Make sure the student has completed the multicultural requirement. The multicultural requirement is mandated by the state for our degree even thought it is not an admissions requirement or a CSU general education requirement.
- Up to two courses can be counted for both GE and major prep.
- It is always advisable to counsel a student to complete a U.S. History (designated by an * on the GE pattern) and a U.S. Political Science (PS 1 or 5) for transfer to CSU since it is a graduation requirement of the system.
