Transferable AA degree using the IGETC GE pattern 3.2.6
This section describes the AA degree that uses IGETC (purple) as the GE pattern rather than Cabrillo's blue GE pattern. If the student has 60 transferable units (UC transferable or CSU transferable - depending on his/her transfer goals), all of IGETC done prior to transfer, and one multicultural class in his/her GE or major preparation, then the student has earned the AA degree. As with all degrees, they can petition for the degree during the semester in which they are completing their final requirements.

The most common major will be Liberal Arts. However, if the student has 20 units towards a different major according to the "suggested programs" in the catalog, then this AA degree could be written for majors other than Liberal Arts. Using the following steps as a guide, fill out the purple "Combined Requirements for the AA Degree and IGETC" degree petition.

  1. Calculate the # of transferable units the student has completed making sure that you check units from other colleges for transferability. Use the UC Transfer Course Agreement (TCA) or the CSU Baccalaureate lists on ASSIST. Remember only 4 units of PE can be counted if the student is going to UC. If you are unsure about any class being used from an out of state or 4 year university in California, check with the Transfer Center Director or the Articulation Officer. This is particularly true for the Critical Thinking requirement, math, and English courses.
  2. Make sure that the student has a 2.4 minimum for UC and a 2.0 for CSU.
  3. Determine the student's projected transferable unit total when adding in his/her in-progress units. For purposes of transfer advising, make sure they are projected to have the required units within the timelines required by the institution to which they are transferring.
  4. Areas 1 through 5 must be completed.
  5. Make sure the student has completed the Foreign Language requirement (for UC only). Attach a copy of the official high school transcript if the FL requirement is met by high school courses.
  6. Make sure the student has completed the Multicultural requirement. The multicultural requirement is mandated by the state for our degree even though it is not an admissions requirement or an IGETC requirement.
  7. Up to two courses can be counted for both GE and major prep.
  8. If a student has not completed U.S. History or Constitutions in high school, it will be required to graduate from a UC campus. In particular, this can affect a foreign student who does not remain in F-1 status. If a foreign student does remain in F-1 status, he/she can petition to have the requirement waived. It is always advisable to counsel a student to complete a U.S. History and a U.S. Political Science for transfer to CSU since it is a graduation requirement of the system.
