Staff Development 4.10
Cabrillo College Staff Development, under the coordination of the Teaching & Learning Center, offers faculty, staff and administrators activities and resources for professional development (see staff development section of the TLC web site, www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/instruct/tlc/). The Staff Development Committee oversees Flex Week, the Classified Retreat and Conference and Funding (AB1725). Section 87150 of the Education Code authorized professional activities in the following areas:
  • Improvement of teaching.
  • Maintenance of current academic and technical knowledge and skills.
  • In-service training for vocational education and employment preparation programs.
  • Retraining to meet changing institutional needs.
  • Intersegmental exchange programs.
  • Development of innovations in instructional and administrative techniques and program effectiveness.
  • Computer and technological proficiency programs.
  • Courses and training implementing diversity goals and upward mobility programs.
  • Other activities determined to be related to educational and professional development pursuant to criteria established by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, including, but not necessarily limited to, programs designed to develop self-esteem.
  • Funding for conference attendance may be requested from two sources, your Division funds and Staff Development.

Division Funds: All regular and contract counselors are entitled to $150 per year to cover all or a portion of the cost of attending professional meetings, conferences and other activities. With prior approval of the Division Chair, counselors may assign their conference funds to others, and the District may add to this fund. At the end of each fiscal year, unused funds shall be carried over in the Division budget for allocation to professional growth and development for the following year (see CCFT Contract, Article 9, section 9.3.1)

Staff Development Funds: The Staff Development Advisory Committee allocates travel augmentation funds, limited to up to $200 reimbursement per person per year. Counselors must use division conference funds before applying for Staff Development travel augmentation funds. Requests for these funds must be submitted on a Conference Attendance Request Form with appropriate signatures and a copy of the conference brochure/application to the Staff Development Advisory Committee for prior approval. Deadlines are listed on the web under Guidelines for Staff Development Travel Funds and in print form from the Staff Development rack in the mailroom or the TLC.

In addition to college-wide staff development opportunities, the Counseling division participates in its own staff development activities throughout the year. A committee of counselors is formed to coordinate these events, which include such topics as CPR training, Crisis Intervention training, and professional growth and rejuvenation.
