1) Records from other California Community Colleges.UC and CSU transferable units for all 107 California Community Colleges are listed on ASSIST. UC lists them under, UC Transferable Courses and CSU lists them under CSU Transferable Courses. ASSIST also lists which community college courses can be used for IGETC and CSU Gen. Ed. 2) Records from all other colleges and universities (UC, CSU, private and out-of-state). Check to make sure the college is accredited by a regional accrediting association (i.e. WASC).The easiest way to check this is whether or not the college is listed in the College Handbook in the Transfer Center. College Source is also a good reference for checking accreditation and type of calandar (semester vs. quarter) in use at colleges and universities. After entering a college name, you can click on the "Profile" icon to view such information. CSU Specific Information. Is the college a two- or four-year college? - this information will be listed in the College Handbook. If the school is an out-of state two-year college, you need to be far more careful about transferable units, just like units from California Community Colleges. Courses should be looked up on "College Source" (ESPECIALLY MATH & ENGLISH).
. Is the college religiously affiliated? If so, religion courses that teach the faith of the institution will not transfer.
. Math courses should be at the level of college algebra, statistics, finite math, pre-calculus or calculus, and must have a listed pre-requisite of Intermediate Algebra. (If you are able to verify this information in College Source, print the page for the counseling file).
. English courses must be college-level composition courses. Look at the course numbering system to ensure that the course(s) are freshman and sophomore-level courses and that college credit is granted for the course(s) at their own institution. For the critical thinking requirement for CSU, the course must state that it includes critical thinking or logic. It's best to check these English and math courses with a UC evaluator. If the evaluator gives you a verbal response, note the response in the student file with the name of the evaluator and the date.
. Is the college or university on the quarter system or the semester system? - this information is often listed on the transcript if you look carefully. If you can't find it, it will be listed in the College Handbook.
.The college or university must be accredited. UC Specific Information. If the units are from an accredited college and the courses are college level, CSU, more than likely, will take them. When in doubt, have the student see one of the CSU reps. who visit Cabrillo regularly. CSU will not accept religion courses from a religiously affiliated college or university, unless it is clear that the course covers multiple religions i.e. world religion or comparative religion.
.Courses must be from a regionally accredited college or university Private/Independent Colleges and Universities.Courses must be college-level and have the same course content as undergraduate courses offered at any UC campus. To determine whether or not the course is college level it is often important to look at the sequencing in their college catalog -- what courses come before and after the one they have taken (this is especially true for math, science and English).
. UC will not accept religion courses from a religiously affiliated college or university, unless it is clear that the course covers multiple religions i.e. world religion or comparative religion.
. Courses in traditional academic disciplines (e.g., science, literature, humanities, and social sciences) generally are transferable. The following are NOT transferable:
Courses that are vocational, technical, or professional in nature (e.g., advertising, real estate, electronics); remedial courses, such as trigonometry; personal enrichment courses (e.g., orientation to college); courses offered through Extension or Continuing Education (the exception to this are UC Extension courses numbered 1-199 - these are UC transferable).
. UC does not grant credit for CLEP exams, work experience or military training..When evaluating for UC, look at the courses that have the same, or very similar departments and titles to our own, i.e. General Psychology; Political Science: American Government; Art History; U.S. History etc., these courses will transfer.
.Make a list of the college-level courses that have unusual departments or titles, or you can't decipher them, and have the student look them up on "College Source."
.Then, either contact a UC evaluator directly with the courses you have questions about, or, refer the student to the Transfer Center for an appointment to evaluate the student's records and research the student's eligibility to UC. If you contact a UC evaluator, make sure you have the course department, number, title, name and state of the college, and the term the course was taken.
.Use UC transferable units to be safe, or call an admissions counselor (preferably someone who works with transfer students) at the private school. Pass-Along for IGETC or CSU General Ed..Pass along is when you use coursework from a UC, a CSU, a private or out-of-state college or university to fulfill CSU General Ed. or IGETC requirements. If you have any questions about using four-year or out-of state courses for IGETC or CSU General Ed., contact the Articulation Officer or transfer Center director to determine acceptability. Using courses taken at four-year or out-of-state colleges for major preparation requirements .If the four-year college is in California, check ASSIST. Otherwise, contact the school
