Bead Embroidery
This class is about process, not product: the process of applying beads to a cloth surface to create texture and line, combined with the process of composing a beautiful piece. As you work on a patterned cloth "sampler" you will learn the four basic stitches (with variations), edging, and fringes. With these techniques you can then create a whole new world of surface adornment with beads as your paint, needle and thread as your brush, and anything that holds still long enough for your canvas.
Materials will be supplied at class. Students should bring scissors and needle-nose pliers and magnifiers if needed.

Drawing for People Who Believe They Can't
This class is for people who believe they can not draw and would like to learn some simple techniques to get started. It is designed to give students confidence in drawing by offering logical ways to render objects. It will attempt to demystify the notion that talent is required to draw "realistically."
Each participant will be provided with simple ways to practice developing skills at rendering. Unlike the standard drawing course which offers a broad and in depth survey of drawing, this class will focus on the fundamental skills in observation and exercises designed to help students create images that visually correspond to what is being observed.
A materials list will be mailed upon registration and students will need to purchase approximately $20 - $30 of drawing materials to bring to class.

Hand Painted Custom Cabinetry
Are you tired of your worn looking cabinets but are not ready to do a remodel? High end kitchen and bath stores offer a line of hand-painted finishes that are beautiful, but expensive.
You can learn how to prepare your cabinets for painting and do a custom refinish on your cabinets yourself. The two types of refinishes that are most popular are the antique-looking finish and the distressed finish. Both of these can be done in many different colors. Expressive Botanical Illustration Level II:
The Colors of Fall
This five-session course will combine the fundamentals of tree drawing in black & white and color with classroom color studies of fall produce. Slide and book examples will give students a cross-cultural overview of the use of the majestic tree in scientific illustration, the decorative book art tradition, textile design, photography, landscape painting and sculpture plus the development of still life paintings from the Renaissance to contemporary imagery. Students will explore the use of traditional and contemporary field sketching materials and techniques in black and white and color to achieve recognizable and expressive tree studies and classroom still lifes.
Two sessions will explore the artistic anatomy of trees at Cabrillo in the glory of their fall colors. October produce from the farmers' market including colorful gourds, pumpkins, pears and other fruits will be the subject matter for classroom still lifes. The abundance of colorful and sculptural leaves will provide material for developing a subtle and varied color palette from earthy browns to saturated warm tones.
The class will conclude with a critique and display of all the work completed in the course.
