Computer and Technology Classes

Employers: Cabrillo Extension can create an account for your company that allows your employees to request your approval to register for our classes. With the company account we can then invoice you when your employees register for a Cabrillo Extension class. Your company account will allow you to approve any registration requests made by your employees, and review or print their transactions.

3D Animation for Beginners (ages 16 & up)

Have you ever struggled to understand an architectural or mechanical design drawing and wish that you could see it in three dimensions? Have you ever wondered how video games are made or animated movies like Shrek? This course will introduce you to the world of digital modeling and animation via 3D Blender, a popular/free animation software program. Additionally, you will be introduced to Computer Aided Design (CAD) and the principles of the design process. If this sounds exciting to you then we invite you to attend our hands-on, information-packed course!

Intro to Adobe Illustrator

Learn to create detailed, professional illustrations and drawings digitally, whether you draw by hand or want to create an illustration from your photos. Adobe Illustrator is a large application and this is your chance to get acquainted with some of the basic tools and techniques most useful for graphic artists & photographers. Find out how to vectorize your pencil or ink drawings, convert a photo into editable vectors, create gradients, use layers, create repeating patterns, designer text tricks on a path and more. Much of what will be learned will be useful for Photoshop and InDesign as well.

This class will be taught on a Mac, but is adaptable to Windows.

Students should bring a brown bag lunch for the break.

Intro to Surface Textile Design with Adobe Illustrator

Learn to create detailed, professionally illustrated patterns for fabric using Adobe Illustrator. Whether you draw detailed designs by hand, want to create a fabric pattern from your photos or draw freehand using Illustrator's tools, this class will teach you how to get your pattern ready for fabric.

Illustrator is a large application and this is your chance to focus on Surface Textile Patterns to be printed on fabric. Techniques most useful for graphic artists & Surface Textile designers will be covered. Find out how to vectorize your pencil or ink drawings, add and control colors for related designs, trace and edit your design and turn it into a usable repeating pattern design for printing on yards of fabric. Learn where and how to print or license your surface textile pattern.

Bring a flash thumb drive and line drawings if desired.

This class will be taught on a Mac, but is adaptable to Windows.

Students should bring a brown bag lunch for the break.

Photoshop for the Hobby Photographer

You can create the best photos ever digitally, whether you use a digital camera, or scan your photos. Photoshop is a huge application and this is your chance to get acquainted with some of the basic Photoshop tools and techniques most useful for hobby photographers. Find out how to repair damaged photographs, correct color, remove unwanted elements, transform your photographs into sepia tones or hand-tinted looks, and more. Much of what will be learned will be useful for Photoshop Elements as well. This class will be taught on a Mac computer, but is adaptable to Windows.

Advanced Photoshop Techniques

Already know the basics? Learn refined selection techniques using masks, channels, and vector tools. Create panoramas with layer masks and use textures and blending modes to make your images pop. Get the best balance of light and dark using High Dynamic Range. Reposition content to perfection with content-aware tools. Adjust exposure and contrast balance with Curves. With these techniques, you will never have to put up with a less than perfect photo again!

Prerequisite: It is recommended that you have solid basic knowledge of Photoshop, or have taken Photoshop for the Hobby Photographer before you take this class.

Quickbooks Pro for the Small Business Owner

QuickBooks Pro is one of the most widely used accounting programs for small businesses. This class will lead you through the set-up and use of the software for basic accounting functions including writing and printing checks, tracking income and expenses, generating financial statements, accounts payable and receivable, invoicing and more.

The class is taught in a computer lab so that students may gain hands-on experience with the software. Purchase of QuickBooks Pro 2010 is not required, but purchasing "QuickBooks Pro for Dummies" is recommended for those who do not own the software.

Students without bookkeeping experience are recommended to take the Recordkeeping for Small Business class.

Students must bring a USB Memory Disk of at least 1 GB of memory to class. Mac users are welcome to bring their own laptops with QuickBooks already installed.

Advanced QuickBooks

This advanced class is designed for those who are experienced with QuickBooks and who are looking for insight on how to deal with the more difficult issues that advanced users often face. Some of the topics covered are: inventory, accounting issues and solutions, tracking and managing sales tax, working with and resolving payroll issues, effective use of remote access, job costing, time tracking and much more.

The class is a hands-on course. Students must have previous experience with QuickBooks Pro software.

Computers for Rookies

Have you ever saved a file, but couldn’t find it later? Have you ever wanted to cry or curse because you couldn’t understand what your computer was doing? This class will give you the foundation for a solid understanding of computer technology. We’ll present an overview of computer components and their functions, explore the Windows interface, and work on critical file management skills.

Topics covered include the roles of hardware and software; operating systems vs. applications; the Desktop; controlling Windows; working with files and folders; the Recycle Bin and more.

How to Use a Smartphone

 

 

If you bought a smartphone for someone, expect to get some calls with questions like, “What’s an app?”, or “Why does my battery run out so quickly?”, or “How do I upload videos to the Facebook?”

Explore the basic functionality of your new smartphone. Learn common tasks like sending a text message, watching a video clip on YouTube, or surfing the Web. This workshop also covers fundamentals like configuring the security options, adjusting the brightness of the display, and setting the device up to work with a wireless network.

Bring your iPhone, Android, Blackberry, or other smartphone to class with your charger.

The Basics of Selling on eBay

Learn strategies for selling on eBay in this class designed to enhance your sales success. Create and enhance listings with photo editing and attractive descriptions. Learn ways to use PayPal in conjunction with ebay and set pricing to maximize profits.

This class will focus on using multiple platforms for successful ebay sales, so students must have existing PayPal, ebay, and email accounts created prior to class, and a Smart phone. Hese will be actively used in class to create ebay listings.
