Leadership Academy - Fall 2015

Express your leader within!

The Leadership Academy is designed to help you express your inner leader in a positively powerful way!

According to Kouzes and Posner, authors of "The Leadership Challenge" ®, Leadership is… “the art of mobilizing others to WANT to struggle for shared aspirations.”

We take this to heart as we design our leadership training courses to support you in becoming a truly inspirational leader who models the way and who has the skills and tools needed to build and sustain long-term credibility.

Module 1
The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders
What makes a great leader? You’ll have many answers of your own, but in some very critical ways, your answers are very likely to overlap with the answers discovered by Kouzes and Posner in the 25+ years of research they have conducted that has become, “The Leadership Challenge.” In this dynamic first session, you will...

  • Write your story about a “personal best” leadership experience.
  • Compare your experience with the 5 Practices of Exemplary Leaders described in “The Leadership Challenge”
  • Understand the importance of the 5 Practices to you, your organization, and success
  • Explore the critical importance of credibility as a leader, and make a plan to enhance your own.
  • Assess yourself according to the 5 practices and make a plan to improve.

Developing as a Leader: A Values Based Approach
To be a great leader is a very personal journey. It starts with a rich understanding of the role of a leader, and continues as you clarify your personal values, strengths and challenges. In this half-day class, you will…

  • Understand the stages of leadership development and the competencies needed for success in various stages.

  • Understand the basis of leadership credibility and the importance of credibility to your success.

  • Learn the Trust Equation, and make a plan to enhance your trustworthiness with others.

  • Clarify your personal values, and compare those to your work values.

  • Make a plan to enhance your values in action.

Inspiring and Influencing Others
Your ability to inspire and influence others is in part, understanding the needs, values and motivations of others, and in part finding creative ways to get your message across. In this hands-on half-day class, you will…

  • Discuss the how, why, where and when of inspiring a shared vision.
  • Engage in unique and creative activities that bring your vision to life.
  • Practice drafting and delivering a shared vision.
  • Receive feedback from others that will help you refine your message.

Driving Change and Innovation

The best leaders not only seek continuous improvement, they create a learning climate in which everyone plays an active role in improvement efforts. In this half-day class you will…

  • Engage in a simulation event that highlights the critical connection between improvement and organizational climate.
  • Reflect on past failures and articulate the lessons within.
  • Look at your operation through the eyes of another and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Work collaboratively to develop an improvement plan.
