CMSP Motorcyclist Training Course

CMSP logo

Our award-winning Motorcycle Safety class is the only California Motorcycle Safety Program (CMSP) approved class in Santa Cruz County.

We provide motorcycles and helmets.

California Law requires that motorcycle and moped drivers under age 21 complete an approved safety training program before being issued a DMV Permit. Successful completion of the Motorcyclist Training Course fulfills the DMV requirement for under 21 riders.

Riders over 21 also benefit since successful completion of the course may waive the riding skills test at the California DMV, and insurance discounts may be available.

The number of students permitted on the range, as well as the time of year (available daylight for the riding portion of class) limits the number of students permitted in each class. Therefore, classes fill quickly.

Before registering for a class, please read the Schedule information below and the Student Information, which includes details about required equipment, certificates of completion, and our cancellation & refund policy.

Registration for Motorcyclist Training Course must be completed by the student themselves, as the information required to register (birth date, mailing address, DL or permit #) should be provided directly by the student. Any inconsistencies or inaccuracies with this information may result in delays receiving the certificate of completion, or problems at the start of class when ID's are used to verify identities.

Additionally, the Student Information that students must read and agree to as part of the online registration, must be completed by the student, not a spouse, parent, or any other proxy.

  • Fee for students under 21: $295
  • Fee for students 21 and older: $350
Students must be UNDER 21 years old as of the first date of the first class in order to receive the "Under 21" discount. Additionally, all students are required to show proof of age/birth date at the time of class. If you cannot demonstrate that you are under the age of 21 at the time of the first class date your registration for that class will be immediately canceled and you will be issued a $295 credit. You may use this credit to register for a class with an open seat and apply the credit toward the full fee for the class.

The lecture portion of class is held on two Thursday evenings and will be held virtually via Zoom. Student will receive their Zoom meeting link for both virtual classes immediately after registration, and then will again receive the reminder, and the Zoom meeting link, 24 hours prior to the first class meeting. The range (riding) portion of class is held on either two Saturdays, or two Sundays, depending on which schedule you select. The range portion of the class is held in Cabrillo Parking lot M. Click HERE for a map of campus.

Each class consists of 4 meetings total. The times for the range portion of the class are listed below:

  • First Thursday evening class via Zoom: 6:30-10:00 pm
  • First Saturday or Sunday - Range 1 at the Cabrillo campus: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Second Thursday evening class via Zoom: 6:30 - 9:30 pm
  • Second Saturday or Sunday - Range 2 at the Cabrillo campus: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm

Before you register for a class please be certain you can be available for the schedule you are registering for. Saturday and Sunday sessions cannot be "switched." You must be able to attend all four scheduled class meetings as registered. When registering for a class, be certain that you can attend all four meetings and arrive on time to avoid being dropped from the class. Students who are late to either Zoom meetings, or range sessions will not be permitted to participate and refunds for late arrivals are not available.

Please note that during the two Thursday evening class sessions conducted via Zoom students must have their camera on, and they must be visible on camera, for the entire class session in order to verify attendance. A 10 minute break will be provided during the class.

Before Registering for a class, please read the Schedule information above and the Student Information which includes details about required equipment, certificates, cancellation, failure, and refund policy.

Please note that we rarely have cancellations, and therefore rarely fill classes from wait lists. We encourage students to register for a class that has availability. If you cannot complete the online registration, and it suggests you call our offices, that means the class is full. If you'd like to know when the next opening is, you may call our office, and we can give you dates for the next class with open seats.

These classes are offered in English only.

Estas clases se ofrecen solamente en Ingles.
