Workshops Designed For the Life-Long Learner
June 22-28, 2017

The collaboration of Cabrillo Extension, Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Department, Cabrillo Stage and NextStage Productions offers a spectrum of professionally taught classes designed for life-long learners aged 50+. Set in a safe and encouraging environment, artists and student artists hone their skills while enjoying the companionship of others with a similar focus. Explore how the creative process promotes health, lifelong learning and an empowering sense of mastery in the theatrical disciplines you wish to study.

Bonus! Registered students will receive an invitation to the Cabrillo Stage "Sitz-Probe" rehearsal (lead actors and orchestra) of Beauty and the Beast.

Acting Up Your Story

9 Sessions
For students who wish to learn skills that connect head to heart and voice. This is great for anyone who wants to use their voice to better communicate through speaking or singing. Be the next TED presenter!

Individual Classes

Broadway Show Choir

Put the “show” in your choir with great choral sound, “choral-ography”, costumes and personality. FUN! “Choral-ography” (choral stage movement) brings each number to life and a storyline ties the songs together. And “voila” it’s show choir time! All levels and abilities are welcome.

Suzanne Duval, MFA, has over 20 years experience teaching voice in Santa Cruz. She has performed with Santa Cruz and Bay Area choirs, with Cabrillo Stage, Opera San Jose, and many other diverse musical ensembles.


Dance the Music of Broadway

Feel the rhythm, learn the steps and experience the combinations used in dance breaks of the great Broadway song and dance numbers.
This class combines with Contemporary Broadway Adventure for an end of workshop performance (optional).

Mindy Pedlar is passionate for music, theater and dance and has appeared in 50+ theatrical productions. She has performed with Juliette Prowse and the Serendipity Singers as well as Cabrillo Stage and many other theater groups. She choreographs musicals and variety shows and teaches adult ballet locally.


Contemporary Broadway Adventure

Soar high with Cabrillo Stage alumni as you build Broadway numbers for a class showcase. Learn staging pointers for solo and ensemble performances that will make your performance pop. This adventure travels from the contemporary Disney style (Beauty and the Beast), to the snappy music of Andrew Lippa, (The Addams Family). This class combines with DANCE THE MUSIC OF BROADWAY for an end of workshop performance (optional).

Kathryn Adkins has 20 years experience teaching theater, voice and directing. She has performed in Europe and for diverse companies including Opera Theater of St. Louis, Cabrillo Music Festival, Santa Cruz Symphony, Tandy Beal and Co. and many musical theatre companies.


Story Sizzle with Characters

The hit playshop on how to tell a vivid story WITHOUT memorization, notes or rehearsal—just got more exciting. Now add into the mix easy, FUN, memorable characters that bring your stories alive. You’ve lived a lifetime—now celebrate that life to the delight of young and old.

Stan Grindstaff, MFA, is a co-founder and featured teller for the Santa Cruz Lucid True Story Swap. Stan's experience includes A.C.T.—SF and The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He is an International Speaker Trainer, bestselling story author and editor.


Playback Theatre Improv Workshop

Playback is the exciting improvisation approach to recreating life stories in fun, safe, energized and playful recreations. Playback is done all over the world, and has specific forms and methods.

Marc will introduce you to some of the Playback forms. We’ll experiment with the delight of re-enacting others’ stories on the spot! Expect playfulness, generosity, and deep connection.

Open to all who have a story to share and/or a desire to work with exciting individuals.
