Painting the Abstract:
Explorations in the Language of Abstract Painting

 

This workshop will introduce participants to some of the major pictorial strategies of abstract painting and serve to further develop the individuals approach to abstraction. The workshop will have daily lectures and slide shows to introduce participants to the form of abstraction to be investigated that day. Participants should look at this course as an opportunity to explore a variety of approaches to abstract painting.

Tim Craighead, MFA, was the 2011 recipient of the Rydell Fellowship and has taught drawing and painting at Columbia, Stanford, UCSC, Cabrillo and Monterey Peninsula College. He has exhibited throughout the US and Mexico and has work in numerous national and international collections, public and private.

Mixed Media Figure Drawing

The seduction and challenge of mixed media are the rich surfaces and unexpected visual relationships that develop as you draw. In this weekend workshop, students will work directly from the model using large-format paper and a variety of media. Basic instruction in drawing the figure and composing will be offered along with directives and material approaches that open new expressive possibilities.

Not recommended for minors.

Painting the figure is a substantial opportunity for both observation and expression. In this weekend workshop, students will work directly from the model with short and long poses and a variety of approaches. Topics include gesture, relationships within the pose, composition, color palette, and paint handling. Approaches are open-ended and offer ample possibilities for exploration.

Prior drawing or figure drawing experience is recommended.

Not recommended for minors.

Claire Thorson teaches figure drawing and painting at Monterey Peninsula College and Cabrillo College. She is a native of California, loves the coast, and has a studio in Elkhorn. Her drawings and paintings travel the territory from figuration to abstraction.

Fearless Painting

Develop your painting technique as the groundwork to freeing the imagination. This class is designed to inspire and jumpstart the creative process. Students are encouraged to move beyond familiar territory and judgment into deeper levels of expression and experience, equipped with a full toolbox of techniques and knowledge of materials. Class time will include demonstrations of techniques and processes, presentations of other artists' work, and lots of hands-on painting time. We will be using acrylic paints and mediums.

The Artist's Illustrated Journal artist journal

Keeping a visual creative journal helps you to live life more deeply. In your travels it helps you to experience a place on a connected and more meaningful level. It keeps you in touch with your deepest desires and affirms you as a creative being in the world, helping you to engage through more than just your senses. In this class we will learn about various techniques and materials used in creating a visual journal as well as work with creative prompts and ideas that will be sure to inspire you. The Artist's Journal workshops combine instruction for techniques in drawing, writing, watercolor and page design with the nurturing of creative process. This is not a class in scrapbooking, crafts or bookmaking. It is a tool to awaken your senses and help you experience the world through artist's eyes.

This workshop provides a safe and non-judgmental environment for participants of all levels of artistic experience.

Travel Sketching - Capturing Intimate Memories

Whether you are bound for exotic places or travel to your backyard...or out and about in town, you will learn how to do quick, spontaneous ink sketches, using a PILOT PARALLEL chisel edged pen. Along with a water brush, learn how to "pull out" various values from the pen's water-soluble ink.  Lots of demos...and lots of fun!  Discover your own creative expression in this daylong class.

Italic Calligraphy

This day long workshop will introduce you to the classic and elegant style of Italic Calligraphy, using the Pilot Parallel 3.8 mm calligraphy pen. Then, in the afternoon, we will make what is called a "cola pen." This fun, handmade pen, dipped in black ink, makes astonishingly expressive marks! We will explore fun ways to bring together the Italic lettering, using this new tool, to explore your own creative "works of lettering art!"

No experience necessary. We welcome all skill levels. Bring a lunch and beverage.

Sumi-e Workshop - Japanese Black Ink Brush Painting

Enjoy a day of learning the revered Asian art of Sumi-e!

In this day long workshop, you will first learn to paint the revered and traditional subject of bamboo. We will then go beyond this "traditional" subject and explore many expressive and experimental ways of ink brush painting from abstract to figurative. Learn to use a variety of found objects (twigs, small irregular rocks, etc.) dipped in ink and sometimes using splashes of water or salt. We'll have fun making bold images to delight our creative expressions!

Lots of demos and lots of fun!

Beginners welcome! No experience is necessary. Bring a lunch and beverage.

Sketching - Journals & Juxtaposition sketching

In this day long workshop we will explore taking your travel or "out and about town" sketches into the realm of journaling... learning to capture the scene with sketch and text. We will use various pens and some simple washes of watercolor or colored pencils to explore various ways to express and document your experience in artistic ways. A delight to look at and a way to share your personal experience with others.

We'll also do "whimsical chaos" sketches, where you capture all you see in a juxtaposed manner! A fun, freeing and expressive way to bring out your own creative imagery.

Creating a Personal Mural Ann Thiermann mural

Have you ever wanted to create a large format mural for an interior or exterior wall? This class will take you through the steps of completing a mural from sketch to completed Image. We will review choosing the site, selecting the theme and color scheme, graphing a proportional drawing, to the execution of a 3'x 5' panel. Highly-pigmented acrylic paints and an alternative "canvas" Tyvek will be provided.

Experienced muralist, Ann Thiermann will also cover these topics:

  • picking the style of painting to expand or contract the space
  • the use of trompe l'oeil effects to expand versus decorative imagery to contract
  • preparing interior or exterior walls, effective use of overhead projections
  • effective use of mural perspective
  • the longevity of various panels as mural surfaces
  • picking a palette and mixing the paints
  • and sealing your final project.

You may paint on the 3' x 5' surface provided by the instructor or bring a painting surface that is cut to your specifications for your site.

Ann Thiermann, MFA, is an experienced studio arts instructor at both Cabrillo and Monterey Peninsula Colleges. She has designed over sixty murals for natural history museums, art museums, libraries, and both private and commercial settings. Her twelve murals in Santa Cruz County add color, humor, history, and the presence of nature to their settings.

Wood Block Printmaking: From Black and White to Color

Come and learn the simple and beautiful process of making woodblock prints. Woodblock prints are a great way of making your own cards, prayer flags, quilt design, and patches. Each student will walk away from this workshop with two editioned images of their own one in black and white and one printed with two colors. The workshop will cover the various types of wood, tools, inks, and papers used to make a print. Carving, color mixing and printing techniques will be demonstrated and experienced first hand. We will be using hand and dremel tools for carving, a press and wooden spoon for printing. We will be printing with oil-based inks and learning non-toxic clean up.

Bridget Henry has been exploring woodcut printmaking over 20 years and continues to be enthralled with this alchemical process. She co-manages the printmaking studio at UC Santa Cruz and has taught relief printmaking at Cabrillo College, California Art Education Association, and Idyllwild Arts Academy. Her recent work includes an outdoor installation of nine large-scale prints on the walls of the Santa Cruz Public Library.
