Use
1. Anthropology/Sociology/Philosophy: Class discussion or paper
topic. In a diverse community, what should be the response to domestic
or sexual violence that is considered culturally appropriate in
other societies?
2. Art: Participate in Chalk-It-Up, a sidewalk chalk mural event
to raise awareness of these issues in our Cabrillo Community.
3. Graphic Arts-Digital Media: Critique sites dealing with Domestic
Violence and Sexual Assault. How user friendly are they? Are the
graphics/design well done and appropriate to the content? Are they
easy to find? Do they provide appropriate referrals and useful information?
Are the links active?
4. Public Safety and Criminology: Have a class discussion of the
issue of sexual assault in the incarcerated population. Explore
your own feelings about how you will deal with perpetrators of domestic
violence, rape and child abuse.
5. English: Discuss the long term effects of child abuse as portrayed
in popular films and literature. Examples: Lolita, Monster, The
Woodsman, The Burning Bed, Sleeping with the Enemy.
6. Health: What are the effects of abuse on such issues as body
image, eating disorders, and personal caretaking?
7. Human Services: Study the correlation between substance use
and sexual violence. Examine the services, hours, resources and
education available in our community for responding to these issues.
8. Statistics: Examine long tern data on outcomes for survivors
of childhood sexual abuse? Do these numbers predict anything for
the future?
9. Nursing and Allied Health: Discuss the reporting requirements
for professionals with regard to sexual assault, elder abuse, child
abuse and domestic violence.
10. Creative Writing: Write a personal reflection on the topic
of domestic violence.
11. Theatre Arts/Dance: Incorporate the issue of sexual assault
into a improvised performance and ask for class responses to the
theme.
12. Journalism: Cover the Chalk It Up event, including information
on what motivated participants to take part in the event.
13. Psychology: Discuss contemporary theories on the causes of
sexual violence, especially intimate partner violence (date rape,
domestic violence, spousal abuse.)
14. Political Science: Explore the history of legislation related
to sexual assault and child abuse (i.e. when was spousal rape first
made a crime, what changes have been made to statutory rape laws
and what prompted these changes?) How is the United States different
from other countries in these issues.
