What is Sexual Assault?

If you are a victim of sexual violence or assault, or are concerned about threats or risks of sexual violence, there are services available throughout our community and on our campus to help you.  Information is available on the campus website, www.cabrillo.edu , through the Student Health Center (479-6435), the District Sheriff’s Office (479-6313), or the County Sheriff’s Office (471-1121 or 911). These contacts are available for reporting sexual violence or assault, accessing campus and off-campus resources, strategies for the prevention of sexual violence, and help if you have been the victim of sexual violence.

Sexual violence is a widespread problem throughout our society today as it affects individuals of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities and experiences. There are many different forms of sexual violence, each having a negative impact on the survivor. Individuals that have experienced such violence often experience feelings including but not limited to anxiety, guilt, sadness, anger and fear. Though the effects of sexual violence can feel overwhelming, there is a lot of support available.  Reaching out for support and working through the healing process is very empowering for survivors as it allows them the opportunity to grieve their experiences and regain the sense of control and safety that may have been challenged.

Any sexual assault or physical abuse, including, but not limited to, rape, as defined by California law, whether committed by an employee, student, or member of the public, occurring on District property, or on an off-campus site or facility maintained by the District, or on grounds or facilities maintained by a student organization, is a violation of District policies and regulations, and is subject to all applicable punishment, including criminal procedures and employee or student discipline procedures. (See also, AR 6110, Student Rights and Responsibilities)

The following sections are designed to provide additional information regarding some of the more common types of sexual violence as well as to provide resources for healing. This can be a difficult topic to examine, whether or not you have experienced this type of violence. If you find the material in these sections particularly disturbing to you, visit our Resources/Links to find additional support that might be right for you.
