A
NOTE TO ALL OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS
Every year Cabrillo College receives approximately $325,000 in VTEA funds to
support our Career Education programs.
These funds support disabled student services, tutoring, Career Night, curriculum
development, conference attendance and a
number of other services. The amount we receive is in direct proportion to the
numbers of students we serve who are
considered disadvantaged.
In order to ensure that we receive all the funds to which we are entitled we
are asking you to survey your students. It should
take about 10 minutes of class time. A packet, with instructions and supplies
sufficient for all your classes, will be in your
mailbox by February 26th. We are asking that you please return the surveys and
any unused materials to the large box
labeled VTEA STUF form surveys in the mailroom by March 7th.
Should there be any questions or requests for additional supplies please contact
Leslie Read at x5778 or
leread@REMOVE-BEFORE-SENDINGcabrillo.edu.
MORE BUDGET ISSUES
On Tuesday, the Faculty Senate approved the attached Program Deletion Emergency
Process to identify programs to be deleted beginning the 2003-04 academic year
due to the loss of income from the state. The process, which will be implemented
immediately, will not cause the lay off of contract faculty funded by the base
budget. In addition, the Faculty Senate voted to recommend deferring the hiring
of the new and vacant contract faculty positions scheduled to begin in fall
of 2003. Each senator expressed his or her dismay over losing faculty positions
but voted to defer filling the positions in order to reduce the number of layoffs
resulting from our projected economic situation. I am truly sorry about all
of this. We will do our best to minimize the negative impact of these fiscally-generated
decisions on you and your students.

HOW YOUR STUDENTS CAN BECOME
INVOLVED IN THE BUDGET CRISIS
The following is information that Christy Vogel sent out to her students. Christy
had kindly provided us with this information
so that you may also forward it to your students should you wish to do so.
The dramatic threat of extreme budget cuts (anywhere between 1.8 up to 8 million
dollars for 2003-2004!) has really
focused the entire campus on why we are here and you, our students, are of course
the answer to that question.
If you feel positively impacted by our department or
any department at Cabrillo College, could you please do three things
for me?
1. Send our representatives a short blurb describing the positive difference Cabrillo College has made in your life.
assemblymember.laird@assembly.ca.gov
senator.mcpherson@sen.ca.gov
A quick email protesting the cuts is available here.
For budget updates and access to legislators in other
cc districts:
http://www.faccc.org/
2. Contact someone in the media and or government and
protest the bad policy of cutting education funds.
(FYI: There is also a severe difference in how much the different branches of
the state educational system are being cut.
The truth is that K-12 and the UC, CSU systems are not having their budgets
cut but they will not receive a full cost of living increase--it will still
feel like a cut but their budget is projected to go in at 1.5 % increase whereas
community college budgets are scheduled for a 6.5% decrease--that's right the
ccs are being treated differently. If you include the fact that we are not getting
the usual cost of living increase, you could say (and these are the numbers
our administrators are looking at for the fall) our budget is being cut 10.5%!!!!!)
A sample of an another advocacy letter is here.
3. Last but not least, as you continue to succeed, please
share your positive experiences at the community college with
everyone and anyone you meet. We serve a greater number of students than the
UC-CSU system and yet we receive less
funding per student. Until the public opinion of community colleges change,
Cabrillo and other ccs will suffer every time our economy fluctuates. This is
especially unfortunate because we are where people go for retraining when they
lose their jobs due to a slow economy or other hardships.
I know this will take some of your time but I believe our community and our college are going to suffer more than their fair share if we do not speak out. Thanks especially for sending a message to our representatives.
ACT NOW!
The following message was sent out recently by the Community College League
of California. Hoke Simpson, President of the Academic Senate is encouraging
all to go to the League site, http://www.ccleague.org/actnow
, and use the letter-writer to send a message to their legislators. It only
takes a minute, and there's a great deal at stake.
As you may have read in the newspapers recently, Speaker
Herb Wesson wants to reconfigure the midyear cut package in a compromise with
Governor Gray Davis. Late last week, we were told by Administration sources
that the Governor wants $288 million in cuts from community colleges, which
is part of the $1 billion, 18-month cut facing the system. We need as many contacts
as possible to legislators this week on behalf of community colleges. Legislators
have seen the media accounts of the cuts and are sympathetic, but they've told
us they need more "grassroots" response,
demonstrating the impact of the proposed cuts on Californians. As reported in
the Los Angeles Times recently, legislators are receiving thousands of contacts
each week on budget issues, and community college contacts are a very small
minority of what is being received. The League has developed an online letter-writer
to help you easily contact your legislators. We need as many local contacts
this week as possible, as your contacts could help the system avoid the additional
$110 million in cuts the Governor wants from community colleges beyond what
the Legislature approved last week. Please forward this message to your friends
and colleagues who may be interested. Act Now: http://www.ccleague.org/actnow
