Instruction Note 3/20/03

Budget Information
CPC met yesterday and reviewed each component's reductions to the general fund. The spreadsheets are on the Cabrillo College Budget Advisory web page at http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/INFORMATION/news/budget/
The Instruction component removed $1,023,305 from the available $6,596,966 budget. Remember that before we began this round of reductions, we cut the Fall 2003 Schedule of Classes by 6.5%. For this round of reductions to the base budget, we removed salaries and benefits of 3.7 FTE administrators, 4.81 FTE classified staff, 4 FTE contract faculty, and too many adjunct faculty. We reduced operating costs such that we are on the razor's edge of survival in many of the programs. Again, I want to thank each faculty, staff, administrator, and student who gave valuable input helping to form these recommendations.

Changes to the Schedule of Classes
In order to decrease the cost of production, the Schedule of Classes will be reduced to around 80 pages. Much of the wrap-around text will be deleted and students will be referred to the college web page and the online College Catalog or the information available through the counselor's in Aptos or Watsonville. In addition, the full course descriptions will not be printed in the Schedule of Classes. Instead, students will see the following statement scattered through the Schedule: "For complete course descriptions see New Students or Current Students at www.cabrillo.edu. That is the only URL to be used in the Schedule. Students will see statements like "For further information, see instructor's web page at www.cabrillo.edu, Faculty and Staff Directory." or "To sign up for orientation, see instructor's web page at www.cabrillo.edu, Faculty and Staff Directory."

Writing Center
Beginning this week, the Writing Center staff will work with any Cabrillo students on their essays, one-on-one, between the hours of 2pm to 5pm in the afternoons, Monday through Thursday. Students may use the computer lab to work on paper revisions during those hours in conjunction with a tutoring appointment. Please let your students know.
