Instruction Note 5/19/03

GRADUATION
I hope you are planning to attend the Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 6, 2003. It is so important for students to see you there. Every year, we honor several students by telling their stories at the ceremony. Please peruse your memory and e-mail me by Friday, May 23rd with students’ stories of success, perhaps a star graduate transferring to a prestigious institution, or one who has overcome challenges, struggles, tremendous barriers or a student that took a course here that inspired them to pursue a life-long dream. Thank you in advance for your valued assistance, and your anticipation of this joyous ceremony.

JUNE 9th-GRADES DUE
College staff in Admissions and Records are concerned about providing transcripts for transferring students. You can help by submitting your grades as soon as possible after your final or by June 9th, which ever is sooner. A&R is working hard to complete transcripts in a timely manner. We owe our transfering students their transcripts and need timely submission of grades to accomplish this task. Please help our students by helping A&R.

RETIREMENT GALA
It was a wonderful way to say good bye to those who are leaving this year. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the
event a success!

CONGRATULATIONS TO NANCY
Nancy A. Brown has recently been elected to serve a two year term as Region E Governor for FACCC. Her campaign statement follows:
I joined FACCC just after the enactment of AB 1725 because I was
so impressed with the role the association had played in the passage
of the bill. Like most community college faculty, I was exhilarated by
what seemed to be a mandate of substantial improvement implicit in
the law. However, it turned out to be much more difficult to
implement many of the provisions of the bill, particularly with
respect to funding and full-time faculty, than I had anticipated. That
disappointment, recently augmented with the probable draconian cuts
in resources, has impressed upon me the importance of a more active
participation in the only organization dedicated to supporting
community college political interests on the state level.
I have spent many years with my senate colleagues discussing
academic and professional issues like best practices in curriculum
design and delivery or student equity or staff diversity; but it is now
painfully obvious that the operational success of all these
recommendations depends on what happens in Sacramento.
With Nancy's strong will, sharp mind, cleaver tactics, they may get something done up there!

STUDENT REPRESENTATION
Please remind your students that elections for student representatives will be held on campus today, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 11 and 2 PM, and at the Watsonville Center Tuesday and Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM.

THANK YOU......
...for all you do for our students!
