Instruction Note 6/05/03

What a year!
I have spent too much time focusing on budget problems this year! The 2.2 million of one-time reductions and the 4 million of permanent reductions are devastating and limit educational opportunities for our students. Additionally, the work by all members of the college involved in making those decisions was exhausting and depressing. Loosing valued colleagues to budget reductions demoralizes those of us who remain.

I need to remember the notable accomplishments this year including

Congratulations to all of us!

Better Communication
I am fortunate to have served the students of this college since 1969. If my memory is correct, each year we continually searched for better avenues of communication. This year, the challenge is even greater given the larger divisions and budgetary issues. Word is out that there are fewer division meetings now than in the prior years. The reality is that not all of the smaller divisions held regular meetings. In fact, it was the minority that held monthly meetings. Word is also out that the new divisions do not hold meetings. In fact, most have held three to four each semester. Others consistently held Program Chair meetings. I understand from recent discussions with faculty leaders and deans that many faculty feel uninformed about issues. I believe it is each person's responsibilities to stay connected with division, senate, and union representatives and to read communications sent by the administration. I also understand that faculty's main focus is on students and applaud this commitment to them. I pledge to work with the divisions to establish mechanisms to increase communications over the next year.

Letter to Cabrillo administrators, staff, and faculty from Mary Ann Hammann
June 23 will be my last working day at Delta School on Cabrillo campus. Thank you for all your kind and generous support to me while I served as Delta's principal. I will miss the caring attention you have provided as I worked to establish Delta at Cabrillo. Sandra Gresham is Delta's new Executive Director and Bob Guzley is the new Principal. I know that they will be wonderful for Delta and its continuing partnership with Cabrillo. I ask you to support them as you have me.
On June 12 we will be graduating 10 seniors, all of whom have successfully taken Cabrillo classes as part of their graduation units. Seven of the ten plan to continue at Cabrillo; two will be relocating to attend other community colleges. These are young students who traditionally do not graduate from high school and certainly do not think about staying in school to go to college. This desire to continue their education and their ability to be successful at the next level of education is a result of all that you and we do as partners in Delta at Cabrillo.
We would love to have you join us at the graduation celebration, Thursday, June 12 at 11:30 at the Sesnon House. We appreciate the role you play in our students' achievement. You share in their success. For those who would want to support Delta through a donation, we have a wonderful opportunity to double any June donations through a matching challenge from our board president and his wife, Jim and Karen Watson. Checks can be dropped off at our Cabrillo mailbox in the faculty room, mailed to Cabrillo 6500 Soquel Dr. or given to Sandra Gresham at graduation. Like Cabrillo, Delta too has endured a year of economic misery. With this matching grant each donation, large or small, now doubles in its ability to help us continue Delta's important work here at Cabrillo. Again, thank you personally for all you have done for me. I will always speak fondly and appreciatively of my time here at Cabrillo.

From Admissions and Records
The staff wish to remind you that it is too late to issue W grades and that they are expecting your grade rosters and positive hours as soon as possible, but certainly by the 9th. They are intending to have the grades available for students on the 18th through Hawktalk and CyberReg. I wish to thank you for working hard to submit all rosters on time. There has been great improvement over the last two years!
