Instruction Notes
8/23/04

Hello! Welcome back! I'm delighted to be back in the Instruction Office and am looking forward to the beginning of the new year. This will be my 35th at Cabrillo College. We have 6 new tenure track faculty who I will introduce to you on Friday, and it looks like we will be hiring over 20 more in preparation for the fall of 2005. Although the budget is not spectacular, it is substantially better that what we anticipated last fall. We look forward to Arts Education Complex and Student Services Building construction beginning in the spring. Best of all, President King is here. He is enthusiastic and inquisitive and is learning about the college. I think you will be pleased with him as the President of Cabrillo College.

Final Exam Correction
The printed Final Exam schedule for next semester is in error. Here is the correction. Classes starting between 11:35 and 1:00 pm MW/Daily will have their exam on Monday, Dec. 13 from 10-12:50 pm, not on Friday December 17. See the attached revised schedule.

Changes in Add Procedures
Admissions and Records personnel have made essential changes to the Class Add Procedures. After researching how other colleges handle late add, and working with the Chancellor's Office, they made an important change. Students will be able to add during the third week of classes (full term classes) if they have been active participants in the class during the first two weeks as verified by the instructor and approved by the division dean. Individual dates for the short term classes will be set and published on the opening rosters.
The regular add/drop period (late Registration) is from 9 am to 7:30 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am to 2 pm Saturday in the 900 Building for the first two weeks of the semester. If you learn that a student is planning to drop your course, please encourage the student to officially drop online or by phone before 9/11/04.

Fee Increase
As you know, fees have increased to $26 per units this fall. We escaped the differential fee for student with bachelor's or higher degrees! Since the $26 fee was imposed recently, your students will receive a letter of explanation and statement from Director of Admissions and Records, Gloria Garing. For your own information, students will not be dropped from their classes if they do not pay the increase. Please encourage your students to pay their fees and remind them about the services of the Financial Aid Office. I was amazed to learn that over $8,000,000 was awarded to our students last year. There is no less available this year.

Class Breaks and Passing Times
Please remind your students that our class listings include passing time. If a class is scheduled to meet from 8:00 to 9:30, the students will be in class from 8 to 9:20. In addition, the state requires we provide our students one 10 minute break each hour of class. When a class session is less than two hours, we are allowed to move the break to the end of the class. When a class is two hours or longer, we must provide the 10 minute break after 50 minutes of instruction.

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Richard Griffiths, Learning Disabilities Specialist, suggests you include the following in your syllabus.
"As required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), accommodations are provided to ensure equal opportunity for students with verified disabilities. If you have a disability that requires accommodations for this class, please contact the Learning Skills Program at 479-6220 (for students with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder) or Disabled Student Services at 479-6379, to make arrangements as soon as possible."
