Instruction Note 9/12/03
Curriculum Development
College curriculum development grants are available for the 2003-2004 academic
year. Again, this year's priority is for distance education. Up to 3 teaching
units at the adjunct rate, or the equivalent, will be available in Winter Session
or Spring Semester to develop new courses or move existing courses to an
online mode. Projects must be related to department instructional plans and
the College Master Plan. The deadline for submitting Curriculum Development
requests to my office is October 3 at 4 PM. Projects, signed by your division
dean, should contain a description of the project, outcome, relationship to
the
College Master Plan, and cost. There are no specific forms for the application;
however, projects related to distance education must have a readiness assessment
attached. You may find a copy at
http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/tlc/faculty_readiness.pdf
If necessary, this curriculum should be submitted to the Curriculum Committee's
fall 2004 meetings and available to students in the spring of 2005.
Census Reports
A reminder to all faculty members that Census Reports are due by Monday, September
15, 2003. Return them to the Grade Desk in Building 100 or the Mailbox of Paula
Macias in the Faculty Lounge. If you have any questions, please give Paula a
call at 6242.
Use this census to drop "no shows" (those that have never been to
your class) as well as those that have stopped coming. It is important that
you drop "no show" students even though your class may have only met
once. The college is mandated to drop "no shows" so that we do not
collecting state funding inappropriately. Please remember that if you make an
error, you can simply call Paula to correct it.
To further complicate matters, students dropped by you will not receive refunds.
It is the student's responsibility to complete the drop process by September
13th in order to receive their refund/reversal of charges.
Please return your Census Report even if you do not have any drops. The Census
Reports are essential for use by the program chairs and deans to plan the Spring
Schedule of Classes. Please submit them by Monday.
All late registrations for semester-long classes must be completed by Saturday,
September 13. A and R will be open from 10 to 2 that day.
Costal Cleanup Day
Save Our Shores invites the Cabrillo community to the Coastal Cleanup Day scheduled
on September 20th. Coastal Cleanup day is a nationwide annual volunteer event,
at which thousands of citizens remove tremendous amounts of debris from beaches,
rivers, and waterways. This year a special event is being planned at Palm Beach
in Watsonville, where in addition to the cleanup, there will be salsa music
( DJ Itziar), live dancers, food, and most exciting -- an aerial art message
project. Immediately following the cleanup, the volunteers will stand in formation
to spell out "Playas Limpias" (Clean Beaches) in the sand, and an
aerial photographer will take the picture from a helicopter. Attached is a flyer
with event details.
IMPAC
The Intersegmental Major Preparation Articulated Curriculum (IMPAC) project
is the intersegmental, faculty-designed and faculty-run project to ensure that
students transferring from the community colleges to UC and CSU are prepared
for work in their chosen major and transfer without having to repeat course
work. The project host for community colleges is the Academic Senate for California
Community Colleges. The project enables faculty from the three higher education
systems to meet regionally to discuss and propose solutions to problems regarding
curriculum requirements and procedures that impede the transfer of students.
Specifically, the project funds regional and statewide faculty disciplinary
and interdisciplinary discussions to address prerequisite and lower division
course work students must complete before they transfer. Active clusters are
* Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology
* Computer Science, Food Science/Nutrition, Earth Sciences, and Nursing
* Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Business, Geography and Engineering
* Anthropology, History, Psychology, and Sociology
* English, ESL, Foreign Languages, Journalism, and Speech/Communications
You can read about their work at the IMPAC web site http://www.cal-impac.org
The clusters welcome your comments and encourage you to attend the regional
and state meetings. Information about the meetings is also on the web site.
Academic Priority Process
As I mentioned in an earlier Note, a Task Force of the Faculty Senate and administrators
met over the summer to review and improve the process and criteria for prioritizing
academic positions. The Faculty Senate had its initial discussion on the modifications
at their regular meeting on Tuesday September 9. They will vote on the matter
on September 23. If you have questions about the changes, contact your senator
or division dean. If you have concerns, express them to your senator before
that meeting. I have once again attached the proposal for your review.
FTES
At this point in time the FTES projection is close to that of Fall 2002. I sincerely
appreciate the work of all of you who canceled low enrolled classes and added
classes to accommodate our wait listed students.
One More Time
Please reminder that all classes need to be dismissed 10 minutes before their
printed ending time due to the built-in passing time.
TLC
The TLC workshop schedule for September and October is on the web at: http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/tlc/calevents.html
Online Software Training
Available
The Foundation for the California Community Colleges purchased software training
for resale but decided this year to provide the Skill Soft license to colleges
at no charge because of reductions to computer training resources system wide.
There are 15 web-based training courses available for the period of October
1, 2003 September 30, 2004. They include training in Office XP applications
and Macromedia Dreamweaver. For a list of course titles go to: http://www.4edu.com/skillsoftproject/coursetitles.htm
The registration period only lasts two weeks and we are allocated to register
125 people! Sign up BEFORE September 25, 2003. To sign up, email the TLC and
in the subject line, type: SkillSoft. The TLC will email you a web link to register
online and the software will be available October 1 to begin your web training.
