Instruction Note 10/09/03

Academic Position Priority Process
Following several weeks of discussions, on October 7th the Faculty Senate approved the work of the Academic Position Priority Process Task Force for one year. I am attaching the approved process with criteria, timelines, and documentation page. Note the very tight timeline and that requests for new academic positions (personnel requisition and documentation page) must be in my office by 10/23/03. In order to receive the 10 points for "loss of contract – 1st year of request for vacant position", letters of retirement must be received in my office by 11/6/03. Those positions that received these 10 point in last year's process, will keep the points since no positions were funded last year.

Learning Skills Program
This is the time in the semester to think about learning disability testing! Please refer any student to the Learning Skills Program that you feel would benefit from an assessment to determine if they are eligible for learning disability services. Students should be able to begin the assessment process within the next few days. Remember we now also offer services in Watsonville and in Spanish. Have students come to Room 1073 in Aptos, the SRC in Watsonville, or call 479-6220.

Faculty Senate Invitation
For the October 21st meeting Jonathan Lightman of FACCC will discuss the new configuration in Sacramento. President Nancy Brown asked him to talk particularly about the possible effects on the Community College's system budget and what FACCC, the League, and the Academic Senate are planning to do in response. Because of the seriousness of the new political situation, all faculty are invited to the October 21 meeting in the Sesnon House. The only item of action on the 21st will be curriculum, which will be done first.

Diversity Training Workshop
A calendar of upcoming Diversity Training Workshops has been established for faculty and staff. The next workshop will be held on Friday, October 24, 2003 in Room 825 from 9 am to 4 pm. For those who have not yet attended a workshop, this will be your opportunity. Please confirm your attendance at the workshop by contacting Kari Kubik (kakubik) in the Human Resources Department at Ext. 6217 by Tuesday, October 21, 2003. The workshop will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants and sign-ups will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. As previously announced, beginning this academic year 2003-2004, everyone who plans to serve on a search and selection committee for the District must have attended one of these diversity workshops. Additional workshops will be held on the following dates. Location of workshops is pending.
           Friday, Dec. 5, 2003
Jan. 2004 (tentatively the week of Jan. 19th; date to be confirmed)
Feb. 2004 (tentatively the week of Feb. 3rd during Flex Week; date to be confirmed)

Passing Time...One More Time
It has been brought to the attention of the Instruction Office that there is still some confusion regarding passing time. The last ten minutes of every class is considered passing time and is built into the printed schedule of classes. This also applies to courses conducted in the evening (i.e., if the printed schedule says the class ends at 9:10 pm, instructors are to release their students at 9:00 p.m.). If you have any other questions, please call my office.

GE Core Competencies
Last month the Faculty Senate approved the Core Competencies for General Education at Cabrillo. These are attached for your perusal. During flex week in spring, workshops will be held to help you identify these competencies and their levels of masters in GE courses you teach.
