MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT HURD
The e-mail sent by President Hurd mentioned an immediate hiring freeze. Since
then I have spoken with him and
he agrees we must proceed with hiring the adjunct faculty. As far as I know
at this time, we will not reduce the spring schedule. We will continue as normal,
canceling classes for low enrollment. Also, we plan to continue with
the recruitment for the tenure track faculty unless, or until, we receive notice
from the Chancellor's Office about changing rules regarding the full time faculty
obligation Cabrillo must maintain. The hiring freeze will be applied
to temporary hourly, administrators, managers, and classified personnel. I will
give you an update on this,
including the spending freeze, after CPC meets tomorrow. This meeting will be
in Sesnon 1804 at 3:30pm. I know that you are as discouraged as I am over the
recent news from our Governor. There will be more details of the reductions
after the legislative process occurs. I will give you information as soon as
I receive it. Don't panic yet!
I will panic for you!
MULTIMEDIA
CD's
Many faculty are developing instructional multimedia CD's to distribute to their
students. Librarians tell us that student may have a problem reading these CD's
in college labs because of network security issues. To guarantee that the CD
you may distribute to your students is readable at labs on campus, please bring
a copy to one of the following individuals for testing: Johanna Bowen, Library
x6536; David Warren or Francine Van Meter, TLC x5030.

through Thursday, from
1pm to 5pm in the MESA Center.
BASIC
SKILLS TASK FORCE
The Basic Skills Task Force has met twice this semester and is considering approaches
to support students and instructors. One suggestion has been that faculty would
benefit from access to paragraphs that have already
been developed to lay out Tips for Success or Study Skills Strategies that could
be placed on their syllabus and discussed right from the beginning of the semester.
If you have developed such a statement, please forward to Bette Hirsch before
the end of the semester. She and the task force will put these together and
make them
available for general use.
DIVERSITY
TASK FORCE
There are two (2) additional diversity workshops being offered to all contract
faculty and contract classified staff. The first meeting was scheduled on Friday,
12/6/02. The second meeting will be held this Friday, 12/13/02. The workshop
will be in the Pool Room, directly behind Building 1100 (the Gym), from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. with a break
for lunch. As was the case with the first diversity workshop, some refreshments
will be provided. The session will
be limited to approximately 20 participants, so please call or e-mail your reservation
to confirm your attendance
at either workshop to Diane Lydon, at Ext. 3528, or e-mail dilydon@REMOVE-BEFORE-SENDINGcabrillo.edu
FINALS
All instructors are required to be present and have a "final exercise"
at the time specified in the final exam
schedule. Some give tests, some review exams, but all must be there.
