Instruction Notes 12/18/03
Instruction Notes
This is my last Instruction Note for the 2003-04 academic year. I leave you
in the very capable hands of Jack Turner. I am looking forward to serving all
of you as the Interim President during this time period, but I certainly am
eagerly anticipating returning to my regular duties after we find a permanent
replacement for John. We have many challenges facing us at this time, mostly
budgetary. As Interim President, I will be active in the community garnering
support for Measure D in March.
Measure D
This bond will allow the college to complete the updated Facilities Master Plan.
With the first bond we expanded the Watsonville Center by 32,000 square feet,
increased ADA accessibility (including 8 elevators), improved the Physical Education
facilities tremendously, improved access roads and transit stops, increased
parking, dramatically improved all college buildings (still a long way to go!),
replaced and upgraded college infrasturcture (electrical, communications, storm
drains, sewer, and water...essentials), prepared the site for Student Service
Complex, and built the Horticulture Complex (including 14 additional useable
acres).
Measure D will fund the Health Care Career Traning Facility including the Stroke Center (on the former Horticulture Site); the acquisition and renovation of the Watsonville Library for needed expansion of the center; additional ADA access and improvements including the second pedestrian bridge across Soquel Drive; upgrading heating, electrical, lighting , and doors; the Student Services Building; the Arts Education Classroom buildings (VAPA), associated equipment; and renovation of all vacated space into modern classrooms for transfer and career education classes.
There will be a bond information web site available in January 2004. I will send you the address.
One-Time Budget Reduction
Here we go again. CPC asked us all to review our budgets in the hope
that we will be able to reduce the college budget by 1.4 million dollars this
year to use as a bridge for 2004-05. As I explained in my last note, the college
does not have reliable budget information for 2004-05. We don't expect to have
any indication until January, then May, and finally over the summer. That being
the case, instead of reducing positions through lay offs, CPC recommended we
refrain from making base reductions until we have a final budget from Sacramento.
As you look through your budgets for ways to get by with less for one semester,
remember these reductions are directly preventing lay-offs of our colleagues.

Fast Track to Work
The Fast Track to Work staff, in collaboration with Cabrillo's Financial
Aid Department and the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union, will be offering classes
in Financial Literacy to the entire Cabrillo student body during Spring 2004.
The 1-unit Saturday classes will cover topics such as: understanding your relationship
to money; credit, credit cards, and debt; banks and other financial institutions;
saving money; and creating a spending plan. These Financial Literacy classes
should prove to be a great benefit for students, not only helping them immediately
in their choices about money, but assisting them in the many complex financial
matters one faces in life.
Cabrillo
Extension
Its time to take that special class youve been interested in. During
January and through February 12, 2004, Cabrillo Extension will be offering Cabrillo
staff, faculty & administrators a special 30% discount off any two of our
classes, not to exceed a discount of $50.00 per class. These can be for you
or for you and a friend. (They do not, however, include motorcycle training
or traffic school.) Treat yourself. These short-term, not-for-credit classes
are held here at the Aptos and Watsonville Campuses and cover a wide range of
interests. For example: Art precious metal clay, bead embroidery,
stained glass; Business financial investments & web based
classes; Computers - Photoshop and Quickbooks; Music blues
harmonica and piano; Nature whale watching and spring wildlife;
Personal Feng Shui, adoption, anger management; Writing
how to publish your writing.
Many of these classes are taught by our own Cabrillo faculty such as local area history trips with Sandy Lydon and Wellness for Women by Deborah Bone. We also have an extensive collection of online classes ranging from computers to health care; from personal growth to finance; from Henry VII to guiding your kid on the Internet. Whatever your interests, start watching for the spring brochure. It will be mailed out in early January and copies will be in your mailboxes. You can register by phone (479-6331) or fax (477-5239) using Visa or Mastercard; campus mail or regular mail or, best of all come & see us, Building 2100A next to the computer lab on the lower campus. Hours are: M 9-5; T-Th 9-6; & F 9-4:30p.
