Instruction Note

Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus

Last Thursday our Chorus performed at the Spring Plenary Session Banquet for the Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges. I was fortunate to be there with Nancy Brown, Dave Balogh, Marcy Alancraig, Beth Regardz, and chorus member Topsy Smalley. We were thrilled to be able to share part of Cabrillo's talent with the other community colleges.

Division Reorganization

Work Based Learning
Educators in Industry
Faculty and staff can visit a business or industry this spring in the late afternoon. EII teams will include educators from K-12 and community colleges. Site visits are structured just like the ones during Flex Week. For a schedule of the industry options and to sign up, go to www.yfiob.org
Conference
Opening the World of Work Based Learning, on May 3, 2002 at the Hayes Mansion in San Jose, is a conference for education professionals interested in integrating work based learning into their classrooms. This gathering offers opportunities for dialogue, information gathering and collaboration. It is sponsored by the Bay Area Regional Consortium and organized by Cabrillo and Ohlone Colleges. Conference registration and a buffet lunch are free to registered participants. For conference details and registration go to: http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/affiliate/worklearn/conference/intro.htm For more information, contact Rebecca Arnesty at
rearnest or 6459.

Graduation
Graduation is on Friday, May 31 at 5:00 PM. The deadline for ordering a cap and gown is April 11, this Thursday, at 3 PM. I hope you will consider attending the ceremony this year. Students are excited when they see faculty honoring their graduation achievement. It would be great if you did not schedule year end celebrations on May 31 so as not to be in conflict with graduation.

Budget Reductions
As you know, the instruction component is to reduce its 2002-03 budget by 71% of the college wide reduction goal or $355,000.  Division Chairs in collaboration with division faculty and staff, recommended areas for reduction within their own budgets. We will review those tomorrow at the Division Chair Council and present them to CPC next Wednesday. Thank you for your participation in this process. I always imagined I would not have to suffer through another budget reduction period. This is the fourth in my memory! At least I have a memory of the better years following reductions.

Invitation to Resurrection Church
Peter Crivello, pastor of the Resurrection Catholic Church, invites members of the Mid-County business community, members in the service and teaching professions, neighbors and friends for mid-day prayer and light lunch at the new church on Wednesday, April 17, 12:15 PM

Spring Break
I hope you enjoyed your well deserved down time.
