Welcome
Back!
I hope
you had a restful and rewarding summer.
I am happy to report that the College met it's FTES goal of 8.5% for last year.
This year's enrollment looks healthy at about 3% over the beginning last fall
semester.
You can check numbers of enrolled and wait listed students in your classes at
http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/webreg/enrollment.html.
Summer Projects
The Student Health
Center was remodeled this summer and is ready to serve students.
The exteriors of the 700 and 800 building were painted. The instrumental music
room was
remodeled to improve the acoustics for our students and faculty. I just toured
the new
Horticulture facility. It is simply spectacular! It should be completed in November
and available
for classes in the spring. Earlier this summer the staff of Computing
Resources notified you
about your shorter email address. The @cabrillo.cc.ca.us can now be replaced
with @REMOVE-BEFORE-SENDINGcabrillo.edu.
Both addresses refer to the same email account, so you will be able to use them
interchangeably
for the time being. Remember to enter your new email address in your Netscape
Preferences.
The New Organization
I
am happy to report that the four new division have been in place since July
1. Over the summer the
remodeling went smoothly. The 5 Deans, 5 Division Coordinators, 4 Senior
Account Specialists, and
10 Instructional Division Assistants experienced special training designed for
their new roles in the
organization. There will be a specialized training session for the Program
Chairs on Monday of this week.
Everyone will be ready to greet you. Thank you for your support and involvement
in the planning for the
reorganization. I appreciate your continued patience through this implementation
phase.
In case you
can't find yourself in the new organization the campus web administrator, John
Mauceri,
has created a database for the new division structure. Check it out at http://www.cabrillo.edu/programs.
Flex Week Update
If
you have not made plans for your Flex Week activities, you can consult the schedule
at
http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/tlc/fall2002flex/
Be sure to note the recent additions of Program Chairs, Curriculum, "Plazas"
- First
Year Spanish Textbook Presentation, and Fostering Student Persistence: Beyond
Quick Fixes.
Message from A and
R
Students will be able to
use Cyber Reg and Hawk Talk registration to add full-time and short-term courses
through August 28. The successful practice of adding students (without add slips)
to full-term classes will
be continued during the first week of classes. Only full semester classes which
have not closed and have not
met will be involved. After the class has met, students must have add slips
signed by faculty to enroll in a
course.
The last day for students to submit add slips to Admissions & Records and
be officially added to a full term
class is September 14, 2002. This date and the registration hours are printed
on each add slip. Please
emphasize the importance of this deadline to your students! Short-term classes
have individual deadline dates, printed on the opening rosters. Students can
add these classes on Cyber Reg or Hawk Talk until the day before
the class meets. You will be able to check to see if students are officially
enrolled in your class on the Permanent Roster (the third one you will receive).
If they are not on the roster, please contact Admissions and Records immediately.
Students can continue to drop courses on Cyber Reg and Hawk Talk through mid-November.
Remember, instructors' signatures are not required for drops.
Class Breaks and Passing
Times
Please remind your students
that our class listings include passing time. If a class is scheduled to meet
from
8:00 to 9:30, the students will be in class from 8 to 9:20. In addition, the
state requires we provide our students one 10 minute break each hour of class.
When a class session is less than two hours, we are allowed to move
the break to the end of the class. When a class is two hours or longer, we must
provide the break after 50 minutes of instruction.
Faculty Resource Guide
The
latest edition of this guide is located at http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/instruct/instruct/facultyresource/.
I hope you will use it as reference throughout the year.
Curriculum Development
College
curriculum development grants are available for the 2002-2003 academic year.
This year's priority is for distance education.
Up to 3 teaching units at the adjunct rate, or the equivalent, will be available
for reassigned time in Winter Session or Spring Semester to develop new courses
or move existing courses to an online mode. Projects must be related to department
instructional plans and the College Master Plan. The deadline for submitting
Curriculum Development requests to my office is October 11 at 4 PM.
Applications, signed by your division dean, should contain a description of
the project, outcome, relationship to the
College Master Plan, and cost. If necessary, this curriculum should be submitted
to the Curriculum Committee's fall 2003 meetings and available to students in
the spring of 2004.
My best wishes to you and your students for a fruitful semester.
