-Empowering Our Students-
Together we can create a bright and
sustainable
future for our
students.
Connect your
students to this exceptional summer
opportunity.
Unless your students can devote time toward the exploration of their talents, it will be hard for them to unleash their full potential.
Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, the
Cabrillo MESA program can offer your students a unique opportunity.
What is the
The Summer Energy Academy is a paid internship opportunity that provides students with hands-on experience in a laboratory setting focusing on the theme of “Energy.” In this lab, students will have the opportunity to experiment, build, learn and invent. Students will:
§ Receive a $1,000 stipend for their participation
§ Accumulate 80 hours of laboratory experience in a four-week summer program
§ Have the opportunity to explore the principals of energy and electricity
§ Participate in activities that will include work with photovoltaic cells allowing students to become familiar with solar energy
§ Learn the basic skills necessary to become solar installers
§ Have access to MESA program tutors and counselors
§ Learn more about science majors and be exposed to the joy of solving problems, the satisfaction of helping others, and the fun of invention
We need your help in
identifying students who will gain the most from this experience.
Does this sound
right for someone you know? If so,
please send us your student nominations.
Academy Dates:
Monday through Friday, July 14-August 8, 2008
8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Bus passes will be provided to
students as needed
Selection Criteria
for Student Participants:
The Academy is open to continuing Cabrillo students and high school seniors who plan to attend Cabrillo in fall 2008.
All students are encouraged to apply, but we are particularly interested in bringing opportunities to students who have been traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering fields: women, low-income, African American, Native American and Latino students.
A strong science background is NOT required but students should be interested in exploring science and the potential majors in the sciences. All students must be committed to regular attendance and participation in Academy activities.
The 2008 Summer Energy Academy will be limited to 24 students.
Opportunities for
Teaching Assistants
Cabrillo students who have declared a major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics and successfully passed Math 5A, or a more advanced math course, may apply to the Academy to serve as Teaching Assistants. Teaching Assistants will receive salaries and the opportunity to continue their work in subsequent summers.
