STEEP (Science, Technology & Engineering: Engaging Potential)

Summer

 Energy

Academy

 2008

-The Power is Yours-

Be exposed to the joy of solving problems, the satisfaction of helping others, and the fun of invention.

This summer you can get paid to play...to build gadgets, to learn the principles of PV solar, and a lot more about energy.

Challenge the limits of your creativity.

This summer don’t miss out!

If you are ready to live up to your potential, let us help you. During your four weeks with us, you will have the unique opportunity to get together with other students and explore all the different avenues you can take to achieve your goals.

Why is the Summer Energy Academy Cool?

Because…

§ You will be experimenting with electricity

§ We will be working on a project to help the community

§ You will have a chance to invent gadgets

§ Our hands-on labs will help you to learn science by building and experimenting

§ We will teach you the principles of energy and electricity

§ You can learn the principles of solar energy

§ We will arm you with knowledge you need to solve some real life problems

§ You might even identify a career path that you might not have even considered yet

§There will be field trips to see energy production plants

§ You will get paid a stipend that would be as much as you would probably earn in a summer job!

§ You will get to know some amazing faculty, counselors and students who can be mentors while you are at Cabrillo

§If you are interested, you can learn about becoming a solar installer

§ You can get on track for that 4-year university that you’re dreaming of

If you think that this is as exciting as we do, and you are ready to commit to it, then the summer academy is for you.

Who qualifies for the Academy?

The Academy is open to students who plan to attend Cabrillo in fall 2008. This could be either continuing Cabrillo students or high school seniors about to start Cabrillo.

All students must be able to attend each day of the program and actively participate in the Academy activities.

Students who are interested in gaining more laboratory experience or who are interested in exploring potential majors in the sciences would be good candidates.

The Academy would be ideal for students who are not necessarily sure of their future direction in academia.

Academy Dates:

Monday through Friday, July 14-August 8, 2008

8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Bus passes will be provided to students as needed

Opportunities for Teaching Assistants

Cabrillo students who have declared a major in science, math, or engineering and successfully passed Math 5A, or a more advanced math course, may apply to the Academy to work as Teaching Assistants in the program and the opportunity to have an internship in the renewable energy field in subsequent summers.  For more information, contact us.  This is especially recommended for interested MESA members.
