About the Central Coast SBDC

The Central Coast Small Business Development Center at Cabrillo College offers a wide variety of services for present and potential small business owners. All counseling services are confidential and free of charge. Read about our achievements for 2008.

The SBDC is unable to provide counseling for tax or legal issues, but we can provide referrals in your area.

SBDC Mission Statement:

To provide quality management and technical assistance for small businesses, resulting in success for the entrepreneur, and economic growth and prosperity for all Californians.

2008 Highlights:
Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties

Counseling Accomplishments

•  Provided 399 business owners with one-on-one counseling for a total of 2,685 counseling hours.

•  Provided counseling in the areas of: start-up and planning 33%, marketing & sales 35%, financing & loan acquisition 17%, accounting 18%, buy/sell 6%, management 18%, human resources 2%.

•  Provided Business Start-Up Packets to over 756 Santa Cruz & Monterey County potential business owners.

Training Accomplishments

•  Offered a total of 113 small business courses and SBDC workshops throughout both counties--attended by 1,581 business owners.

•  Developed & presented a Business Accelerator Program (BAP) with the Monterey Chamber of Commerce

•  Collaborated with Your Future Is Our Business to develop and present two seminar series to 67 young entrepreneurs

Economic Impact - Loans

• Provided 55 local businesses with loan acquisition assistance resulting in $9,353,549 in funding

•  SBDC Clients received loans through Conventional financing, SBA Guaranteed, SBA Micro-Loans, County of Monterey Revolving Loans, and other programs

Economic Impact- Jobs

• With the help of SBDC Counseling, 47 jobs were created locally

• The SBDC documented helping local businesses retain 161 jobs

Economic Impact - Contracts / Awards

• Assisted 7 local businesses to become certified for government contracts, qualifying them to sell to local, state & federal governments

Economic Impact - Other

•  Actively assisted 198 clients to accomplish business goals including: planning and starting their business, creating and retaining jobs, increasing sales and e-commerce success, obtaining loans, financial analysis, buying businesses, implementing bookkeeping systems, hiring employees and turnaround strategies

Community Collaborations

•  The SBDC enthusiastically collaborated with over 45 local, state and national organizations to assist in local Economic Development by providing workshops, training, and counseling and by participating on various committees. SBDC staff served on the Board of Directors for the Employer Advisory Council, El Pajaro Community Development Corporation, ChildCare Ventures, Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce, CalCoastal RDC Loan Committee, Marina Business Incubator and Your Future Is Our Business.

Paid for under the current grant with the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Humboldt State University Sponsored Programs Foundation.SBDCs are supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration and extended to the public on a non-discriminatory basis.
