Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a method of tutoring that involves discussion groups after a class led by a leader who attended the class and can reinforce concepts that students need to review, based on observations during the class about where students were struggling. Often, the SI leaders are students who received an A or B in the class previously and have received tutor training for group discussion. SI has been proven to be more effective with consistent grade improvement than drop-in tutoring, and can be offered in any subject. SI is an integral component of the STARS First Year Experience program for math classes.
