What are Flex Days?

Flex days provide time for faculty to participate in development activities that are related to "staff, student, and instructional improvement" (title 5, section 55720). The flexible calendar program is a component of the staff development program and the major vehicle for faculty participation in development activities.

The 10 days per year called the flexible calendar allows faculty (full-time, part-time, instructional and non-instructional) the time to work individually or with groups to achieve improvement in three distinct areas,

  1. Staff improvement
  2. Student improvement
  3. Instructional improvement
Am I getting paid for Flex Week?

Yes. It's part of your 175-day contract. You may earn Flex credit during any non-duty hours (hours you are not scheduled to be in class or in your office) throughout the fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). CCFT Contract Article 9.2

Flexible calendar program participants are primarily faculty. However, other college personnel are involved in flexible calendar development activities.

What is considered Professional Development?

Professional development may include training programs, conference attendance, seminars, group retreats, field experiences, and workshops such as: course and program development and revision, development of new instructional materials, and other instruction-related activities. Activities may include individual or small projects, or institutionally planned activities.

What is Flex Credit?

Flex credit is the amount of time the state says is equivalent to what faculty would be spending in class without a Flex program. One hour of time spent on professional development equals one hour of Flex credit. We are required to verify that faculty engage in professional development activities equivalent to their in class obligation.

What days are mandatory?

Full-time faculty have a minimum time commitment of 24 flexible hours per year PLUS two fall semester mandatory days and one spring semester mandatory day. (In the fall, it's Division/Department Day and All College Day. In the spring it's Division/Department Day.)

Partial contract faculty are required to participate in a specific number of days, which is prorated on a percentage basis of an individual's contract. Adjunct faculty are required to participate in at least one hour of flex activity per teaching unit each semester.

What if I don't complete my flex obligation?

If a faculty member misses a mandatory Flex Day, he/she shall be charged under the appropriate leave account in proportion to the missed Flex time.

How does my division keep track of flex hours?

Faculty may fulfill their flex requirement by attending workshops on flex days, participating in advisement at registration, or performing individual projects on designated flex days. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by your Division Dean.

Each faculty member is required to submit EACH semester, a Flex Agreement Form to their Dean. The forms are linked on the Staff Development page.

What if I only work part-time?

Partial contract faculty are required to participate in a specific number of days, which is prorated on a percentage basis of an individual's contract. Adjunct faculty are required to participate in at least one hour of flex activity per teaching unit each semester.

You may wish to receive credit for an individual activity, fill out an online Individualized Flex Activities Agreement and submit it to your Dean for approval.

Can I attend if I'm not a faculty member?

Absolutely! Flex workshops are for the entire college community and many events are sponsored by the institution.
