Fall 2011 Flex Week

The Cabrillo College Staff Development Committee has prepared a great program for Fall 2011 Flex Week with a wide array of professional development opportunities. Support your colleagues by attending these workshops. [Flex Calendar]

NOTE: There is still room in Academy for College Excellence's Faculty Experiential Learning Institute (FELI)
Summer 2011: June 13-17, 2011

The FELI is a 5-day institute that teaches core ACE curriculum around communication, reflection, working styles, and leadership techniques. Participants can learn new skills, renew themselves professionally and experience an educational approach similar to the methods used to teach students in the ACE program. The FELI is the first step in becoming an ACE instructor. Go to academyforcollegeexcellence.org and click on events for more information and registration or contact Fran Guerrero at 477-3343. Spaces are still available for the June FELI.

Edustream On-Demand Video

Cabrillo is now an Edustream partner, and faculty and staff can upload video content to the web for streaming, and access educational video content produced by Dallas Telelearning and soon, Ambrose. Edustream is a video-on-demand service funded by the Chancellor's Office through the 3C Media Program and is no cost to participating community colleges. EduStream's proprietary content is grouped according to categories including Subject (broadest), Discipline, Course Description, Topic, Clips (narrowest). Edustream gives the instructor a URL to post on their college webpage, in Blackboard, or on a Library web page. The three servers are "referrers" and the links only work when placed on a page hosted on one of those three servers. (In other words, you cannot email a link to students to watch the video. They must access it through a link on the web.) Contact the TLC for more information on accounts for new users. All accessibility rules apply. Proprietary content is already closed-captioned.

Firefox 4

Firefox just released a version 4 that has a new look! A cool new feature is the "Awesome Bar" that allows you to type terms into the location bar and it will find matches based on your browsing history, bookmarked sites, etc. In many circumstances, it saves time spent Google searching. FF 4 is also supposed to be 3.5 times faster than the version 3.6. Your site tabs are now on the top, you can put frequently visited sites into a single button at the top, and bookmarks are in a single button. You can also now reload a page from the location bar. Other features like password manager, managing pop-ups, and a pulldown menu from the search bar makes finding resources easier. Georg Romero, Library Director, brought to my attention the cursor focus issue in Blackboard went away. Ahhh...the little things that make us happy.
