Fall 2011 Flex Week
Join Renée Kilmer and Rory O'Brien to help launch the next accreditation self-study. Between now and the site visit in fall of 2013 we will be forming teams, coordinating research work and writing our report. The self-study is always a great opportunity to learn more about Cabrillo and to help assess our success as an institution in meeting the ACCJC's Accreditation Standards. Find out more details at the workshop on Monday, August 22.
The TLC has been working hard to get ready for fall semester. Our final task is configuring SafeAssign, the plagiarism detection software. Special thanks to Kip Nead, Ryan Andres, and Barbara Durland who worked this summer to set up account activation, and migrate over 500 course sections to managed hosting.
Cabrillo began using WebCT (now called Blackboard CE8) in 1998. It was developed at the University of British Columbia. In 2006, WebCT was acquired by Blackboard and the name changed. The company then spent the last few years developing a single learning management system, Blackboard Learn (9.1), which provides twice as many tools to enrich the online learning environment for students. Cabrillo will begin teaching with version 9.1 beginning spring 2012.
Last January, 22 distance education faculty participated in a two-day Blackboard 9.1 training. We surveyed the group at the end of spring, and the majority of responses to the new version were quite positive. Additionally, the TLC developed a migration plan that will assist faculty in converting their courses this semester. For more details, visit the Blackboard 9.1 Upgrade site.
Flex week training on the new version (9.1) is encouraged. See the Flex Calendar listing for details. The TLC staff will conduct workshops throughout the fall, and schedule time to work with each faculty member who will be using Blackboard starting spring 2012.

Edustream On-Demand Video
Cabrillo is now an Edustream partner, and faculty and staff can upload video content to the web for streaming, and access educational video content produced by Dallas Telelearning and soon, Ambrose. Edustream is a video-on-demand service funded by the Chancellor's Office through the 3C Media Program and is no cost to participating community colleges. EduStream's proprietary content is grouped according to categories including Subject (broadest), Discipline, Course Description, Topic, Clips (narrowest). Edustream gives the instructor a URL to post on their college webpage, in Blackboard, or on a Library web page. The three servers are "referrers" and the links only work when placed on a page hosted on one of those three servers. (In other words, you cannot email a link to students to watch the video. They must access it through a link on the web.) Contact the TLC for more information on accounts for new users. All accessibility rules apply. Proprietary content is already closed-captioned.
