Publishing Your Syllabus and Other Course Information with Dreamweaver

Cabrillo staff and faculty can apply for a Web Publishing account through the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC), room 1095.

To help get you started, the TLC staff also provides workshops and one-on-one consultations. The staff can be reached by phone at x5030. Your web publishing account provides you with a personal website and a short, easy to remember URL (Universal Resource Locator) based on your name.

If you will be one of the people responsible for editing shared department websites, then discuss this with the TLC staff. If you decide to have a student or contractor work with you on a department site, the TLC staff can help you assess the skill level of your team and orient them to the college website's structure and necessary guidelines for meeting accessibility standards.

Be aware that publishing a web site is a complicated task that requires time, patience, and extreme attention to detail. Allow plenty of lead-time to learn how to use the technology. Do not hesitate to stop by the TLC for personalized asistance.

Setting the Site Definition Wizard

When you set up your site, Dreamweaver also sets up a remote server folder for you. Your remote folder is on the machine where your web server is running. In the Dreamweaver Site panel, the remote folder is referred to as your remote site. The remote folder enables you to transfer files between your local disk and web server; this makes it easy for you to manage files in your Dreamweaver sites.

  1. From the Site pull-down menu, select New Site [view example]
  2. Enter the name for your site and click Next
  3. Check the radio button, "No, I do not want to use a server technology." and click Next [view example]
  4. Select the radio button, "Edit locally, then upload to remote testing server." AND enter the path to where your local files are stored on your computer. [view example]
  5. Then set the location information for the Cabrillo web server [view example]
    1. Be sure to enter the information you were given by the Cabrillo Web Administrator. If you published previously, you will notice the "public_html" folder is new.
    2. If you have used Dreamweaver before, you may have to manually uncheck passive ftp. On the Advanced tab of the Site Definition window, be sure that the box next to "Use Passive FTP" is unchecked.
    3. Uncheck SAVE password if you are sharing Dreamweaver with another user.

Avoid Spam

The primary way email addresses fall into the hands of spammers is by being placed undisguised on the web. To avoid spam, it is becoming common practice to disguise email addresses so that web page scanners won't detect them. Some simple disguises: jasmith (at) cabrillo.edu or jasmith@REMOVE-BEFORE-SENDINGcabrillo.edu. Your list in the faculty/staff online directory is already spam-proofed, but you will need to disguise your own email address on any other pages you publish.
