Challenges for College Students

Most community college students face one or more of the challenges below when pursuing a college education. Cabrillo College recognizes that our students have a variety of educational goals and purposes for being here. The college has resources to help our students face these challenges now and hopefully in the future whether they are here with the goal to transfer or to develop skills for promotion at work. The following web pages discuss some of the expectations in a college learning community and where to find available campus resources to help meet those expectations.

It is recommended that you review the short report questions presented at the end before you read about the topics below. Once you have filled out this report (either by hand or on the computer), proceed to the short essay assignment.

The essay assignment requires you to plan using a pre-writing technique, write the paper, and then meet with a tutor before editing. You can learn more about these steps in the portion of the website entitled "Skills for the Writing Process."

COMMON CHALLENGES:

  1. Assumptions and Expectations in a College Setting
  2. Job and Family Responsibilities
  3. Financial Limitations
  4. Cultural isolation--"culture shock"
