NAVIGATING the Collegiate Dictionary:
Parts of Speech

Big, fat bookImmediately after the pronunciation information in an entry, you'll discover an italicized abbreviation that indicates the part of speech most commonly ATTRIBUTED to the word. In this case, bias is indicated as being n., a noun. Although bias is the root word for other forms of the word (for example biased and biasing), the most common form of the word is the root noun, bias. Just like the pronunciation symbols, you'll find a chart in your dictionary listing the abbreviations of the parts of speech.

Main parts of speech include: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and various words that coordinate phrases and clauses (like coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs).
