English 290:
Writing Fundamentals
English 290 lab website is under construction. Please rejoin us in the fall for more information about online services for lab students.
Instructors: Diane Putnam and Tera Martin, Directors of the Writing Center and the Watsonville Integrated Learning Center. However, you will spend much of your 290 lab time working on your own and meeting with Lab Instructional Assistants (LIAs) and tutors.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: (Summer and Wintersession weekly hours are more intensive than in Spring and Fall. Please ask a Writing Center tutor for information about required hours in these shorter sessions.)
To earn 1 unit in fall or spring:
Complete at least 4 different writing assignments through three steps: prewriting, drafting, and editing.
+2 hours per week in the Writing Center developing these assignments (total 30 hours).
+one hour Homework per week, completed inside or outside of the lab (total 15 hours).A MINIMUM OF 30 minutes per week of all students' lab time must be spent with a Writing Tutor. The tutors, or Lab Instructional Assistants (LIAs), will help you select writing assignments, maintain your class portfolio, and provide feedback on your homework. They will also assist you in learning and applying new skills and techniques to planning, writing, and editing your 290 writing assignments as well as writing tasks in other classes. You may meet with a tutor more often as needed, up to twice per day. The rest of your lab time will be spent working independently in the lab, practicing these techniques on your papers and other writing assignments.
MATERIALS FEE: There is a $12 lab fee for your class materials. Please pay the fee at the College Bank (100 Building) when you register for English 290 and bring the receipt to the Writing Center or Watsonville ILC for the course binder.
HOMEWORK: You may spend this weekly "third hour" in the lab if you wish, but if you prefer to work off-campus, you can develop your 290 assignments or otherwise develop the skills presented in this class. Suggested homework includes:
